Cervix question...

I went to del. suite last night with period pain and low back pain (I'm only 27+2weeks).

My consultant did an internal to check if my cervix was dialating (it's not), but when I looked at my admissions sheet this morning she had put that my cervix is posterior (good thing), 2cm long and medium texture.

What does this mean, why have they measured the length of my cervix and is it relevant to anything.

Thanks. Gemma. x

Hi Gemma

There is a known correlation between cervical length at different stages of pregnancy and early delivery, which is most likely why your cons did the measurement. The length decreases in the course of pregnancy as the cervix ripens and prepares to dilate. I would ask if they have any concerns about your current cervical length.

When your cervix starts to efface/dilate in labour, is becomes shorter and shorter until it is really almost paper thin at full dilation.
A cervix which is 2cm long (approx - they wouldn't have snuck a ruler up there!!) indicates that you are probably not really in labour yet.

Thanks for the advice, has put my mind at rest a little! Am relieved that it means im not about to go into labour as I'm only 27+2 weeks!

I still have the low back and period pain, but maybe the baby is just laying funny

Did they put you on the monitor thing to check the pains were not contractions ?

gemdangracie · 06/05/2009 12:16

Yeah they had me on the monitor for over a hour and they wasn't contractions, but I am a "silver star patient with a high risk status" and my consultant did the internal just to check that i wasn't in early labour (no idea why as i told them I didnt feel like I was in labour)

Have to go back on monday for another clinic appointment and some dopplers..

Oh good I'm glad they checked. I would ask them to do a proper check of your cervical length (by transvaginal ultrasound) when you go back on Mon. And ask them if they are concerned about your cervical length. You're not in early labour now, but they may be thinking you'll go into labour a little early due to your cervical length.
