Homebirth with ectopic fetal heartbeat - what are the chances?

Hi
I am 36+1 & just saw midwife to confirm home waterbirth. Everything is good except she detected an ectopic heartbeat in baby & was a bit vague about implications. Said to wait until next visit at 37+5 then she'd refer me for monitoring at hospital if it was still evident. If it is, does anyone know how likely it is I'll be allowed to have baby at home? Also what's the risk for baby of the birth? Has anyone experienced anything similar? I just found out he is no longer breech so was all happy things looked straighforward I could easily panic about this. Thank you!

A quick google shows that this isn't usually serious. However I think I'd want another appt sooner than that, can you get in at 37 or 37+1? That way you can get the referral taht bit earlier if necessary, and hence some answers sooner rather than later. I can't find anything more specific linked to haomebirth or birth risks, so your midwife/consultant would be the best place to start. Good luck!

Thanks Sparkle. In the sprit of trying not to panic I half think I should just go along with midwife, who obviously wasn't concerned enough to do anything sooner (& she did speak to the hospital whilst I was there to get a second opinion). I think I need to sleep on it. Just watched the Birth into Being dvd for inspiration about birth. There is so much that can feed into my fear of the process, that whilst I don't want to bury my head in the sand, I don't want to indulge my fear either. Who knows the bst approach...I think my gut feeling is that really everything is ok though.

In which case I'd look at it as a 'taking control' process. By getting a referal earlier you will get an answer earlier - more than 90% positive chance from what I can see online - but that's the point, you'll get a definitive answer with more time to think about the implications if there are any. You'll be able to plan your homebirth more fully, or come to terms with the need for a hospital birth in less of a rush. That's not indulging your fear - it's facing it head on and giving yourself the best infomation in order to make a decision

Just saw our doula & she felt the same really, so I'll contact my GP first thing. Thanks again.
