Please advice,
Going into hosp at 1pm today to be induced with ds2 i am term +11, i have never been to the hosp before no idea what happens, how long should i expect to be there before labour even gets going? any tips? i am so scared, not of labour but of being induced.

it can take a few times with the pessary or whatever you're having, so be prepared for a wait.

having said that, mine worked first time around and i wasn't even full term.

i didn't have an epi so it is possible regardless of what they tell you. however, it was very painful, but hey labour generally is. nothing wrong with epi though if you decide you want it!

don't be scared to demand g and a when you feel you want it. my mw said it was pointless for me and gave me pethidene but in the end i found the g and a more useful.

i had a really speedy labour 8 hrs start to finish, first 4 hrs didn't even have dh there as it was fine. as soon as my waters broke it became more painful.

i didn't need any intervention, tore a bit which i wasn't even aware of at the time. also my baby was 8lb 13oz so not tiny.

i felt i had a positive experience on an induction, next time i don't want pethidene though that is personal preference.

tip: take ipod/mp3 player as i couldn't concentrate enough to read but music was great to pass the time.

good luck, you'll meet your baby soon

ps i was induce at 7pm, labour started at 12.
pps don't be scared, you'll be ok.

I was 42+5 when I was induced with ds1.

I was monitored for 1/2 hour to check everything was ok and then had one pessary at 9pm and monitored again for another hour.

I was told to expect some prostin pains which could be quite uncomfortable. I started getting pains about 2 hours after havig the pessary so had some cocodamol and put on my TENS machine. That didn't seem to help much so the mw suggested I had a bath which I did.

The pains seemed pretty bad to me, and were coming and going but I hadn't got my watch on and so didn't know how often they were coming.

The mw called to see if I was ok, and I decided to tell her that the pains were pretty bad so she told m to get out and she would examine me.

It turned out that they weren't prostin pains - they were labour pains and I was 9cms dilated!!

I was whisked through to delivery and ds1 was born at 4.4am with just gas and air to help me.

Hope all goes well for you

xx

are you being induced for being post dates only? you can ask for expectant management, and discuss induction again at 42 weeks. have you had a sweep? do you know what your bishops score is?

you will most likely be given a pessary on the ante natal ward to start your cervix softening and dilating

then once it is open enough, and there is room on labour ward, you will be transferred there to have your waters broken, and if all that has not got labour going, you will have the synto drip

sometimes it can take 2 - 3 pessaries to get things started, depending

make sure you move as much as you can, don;t lie in bed waiting for it to happen !

I was induced at 40+15!

Pessary was given at 8pm, weird irregular contractions started about midight and they gave me pethidine as the contractions were so mad they said I wouldnt make it to delivery in the pain I was in! I then slept til 4am, where I woke up screaming and was 6cm, then transferred to delivery suite.
ds was born at 10.30 so only 6 hours labour which was preferable to my spontaneous labour which took 25 hours!!!

Dont worry you will be fine, good luck

CandleQueen · 25/04/2009 10:24

My induced labour was very long (nearly 40 hours, and then DS born with forceps) but it was my first labour. DS2 was spontaneous labour and only 7 hours.
I've had lots of freinds who were induced for a 2nd baby and the pessary did it's job first or second time, with no need for synto or having waters broken.

I was induced at just over 42 weeks.

My only tip is if you want pain relief ask for it, or prime whoever is going to be with you to ask on your behalf.

I wasn't in a frame of mind to ask for pain relief, so I didn't get any. They didn't think to offer.

maltesers · 25/04/2009 10:36

Dont be scared. I was induced with my third baby and after one pessary my waters went at 5 pm. I was induced at 1.30pm and he was finally born at 1.10am . Its no more painful. just get that gas and air and Epidural if you wish. lots of luck and dont worry you will be fine. Thinking of you. hugs hugs. xx

I was induced with DD1. I went in to the hospital at 10am.By the time they'd done all their checks it was midday.

They inserted a Pessary at 12 midday, and said they didn't expect anything to happen, but they would insert another one at 6pm.

I kept upright and active, sent DH home at intervals.Read magazines etc. Started to get "Backache" which for me is the start of things.

At 6pm they inserted another one,and gradually the backache stepped up and seemed to be coming in frequent waves. On the monitor they told me they were contractions.

By 9pm,they were getting very uncomfortable,so they examined me and I was 3-4 cm,so they gave me Gas and Air,and said I could "go upstairs" ( Delivery Suite) when I got up there, the "Contractions "continued and were getting so I couldn't talk through them anymore.
At 11.30 the doctor examined me,said I hadn't progressed even the the contractions were 3 minutes apart, and decided to break my waters.

This acclerated things tenfold! I delivered DD1 at 1.00am.

Move around as much as you can, when I rocked and squatted I felt I could cope with the pain really well.Unfortunately for me,they couldn't get a "trace" when I was mobile,so made me lay down after 11.30pm.

Good luck.

Good luck. When DC3 was induced it took a very long time - only because once they'd put the pessary in they suddenly became incredibly busy, and just didn't have time to do anything else with me. It was obvious the pessary had done nothing, but a full 30 hours later that they broke my waters. Then I needed the drip, and DC3 was born very quickly after that - only 4 hours. So bring some books and magazines.

I did find the pain of that labour way more intense than others, so don't hold back on asking for pain relief. There was very little let up between contractions - my memory is that it all merged into one long contraction.

alannabanana · 25/04/2009 11:22

being induced is scary - you're not alone there woody2shoes. i kind of feel they throw inductions around all too liberally these doctors.
i was induced at term+2 as my blood pressure was through the roof - i had pessary, waters broken with little hook (very weird experience) and oxytocin drip in my hand. i was petrified and was actually shaking with nerves in the delivery room. im afraid i've no idea how long the process took - except that i went in weds at 2pm and DS wasn't born til friday 3am - but my hospital were a bit snowed under and decisions were made slowwwly.
defo have your partner with you at all times for moral support, bring books, mp3, snacks, games, whatever you need to occupy you and calm your nerves. dont be afraid to ask loads of questions if you have them.
one thing i will say is that once your waters are broken the contractions will step up 10 gears and become very painful very quickly - they will say you NEED an epidural, but you make that decision, not them. i managed without one despite the doctors insistance - gravity, as other women here have said, is your best ally in getting that lovely baby out - if they have to strap you down to monitor the baby's heartbeat, fine. otherwise KEEP MOVING!
another thing i found was that i got very dialated very quickly, thanks to aforementioned gravity and the oxytocin drip i think, and they didn't believe i was fully dialated until i insisted they examine me - i was of course, and had to start pushing. remember you're the one living inside your body, not them; listen to it and you'll be fine. the birth is just a moment in time - a few hours of pain for a lifetime of happiness with your baby.
best of luck, we all wish you well.
xx
