Does anyone have any recent experience of St Peter's in Chertsey? I am told it has got much better in recent years and that the home-from-home rooms are good but have suddenly had a bit of a wobble about it - need to decide soon as am 33 weeks!

Also if anyone knows if you can get a private room after delivery and how much it costs that would be really helpful too.

You can ask for a private room after delivery but they don't always have any available. They were £100 per night 4 years ago.

I gave birth there 12, 7, 5.5 & 3.5 years ago and it really is a lovely delivery suite. The Joan Booker ward leaves a lot to be desired so just try and leave asap! Too noisy, too bright, 6 bedded wards, insufficient food. However you each have your own TV monitor thingy (£3.50 per day) which is a huge improvement.

I just discharged after 6 hours

Hiya, I gave birth there 19 months ago. Hmmmm. My experience was not good generally, but it was a very busy day (compared to the rest of the 2 weeks I was there) and I was induced anyway which is, I believe, generally rubbish. Support during labour was non existant (probably as it was such a busy day), and there seemed to be a real mixed bunch of midwives, some good, some I would barely trust to wash my car let alone deliver a baby. But I think the same can be said for anywhere really.

Can't tell you about the home from home rooms, but I can tell you about the emergency care, which is absolutely fantastic (if I can get past the fact that I might not have needed it if I hadn't been in hospital and being mucked around with in the first place!). DD was in SCBU for 7 days, then in transitional care with me for another few days, and they were totally fab, and I had a few further problems, which were dealt with reasonably well. If something goes wrong, I think they have the biggest neonatal unit in surrey or the south or something like that, definitely where you would want to be. The follow up care for DD's various allergies etc has been amazing as well.

Private rooms are available, if they are not full (they only have around 6-8), and cost is from just below £100 to over £100 a night depending on which one you get. They felt sorry for me because of all the problems we had, so they gave me mine free though!

Food is absolutely terrible. I had to get DH to bring in microwaveable ready meals for me. I was up on SCBU quite a lot and would come down to find my dinner was a dry cheese sarnie with a bit of extra cheese and biscuit. Nice and balanced for a new mother.

They have a video tour on their website which might help as well.

Hope that helps and doesn't put you off too much - I think they are OK on balance and great in an emergency, just that my 'birth experience' overall was crap, but not necessarily because I was there!
