Has anyone every had the oxytocin drip after a previous c-section?

Hi,

I was just wondering the above as I am currently 6 days overdue with my second child. I had a previous emergency c- section with my first due to failure to progress (and was induced after being 2 weeks overdue). I had a membrane sweep Tues which led to my waters breaking and a show appearing, although since then contractions have been irrregular and sporadic. I have been monitored and have been sent home now for 2 days running. I have to go back tomorrow and they said I may be able to use the oxytocin drip (as am desparately trying to VBAC). I am very nervous however to use this as have heard of increased chance of uterine rupture plus when I had mjy first child my baby became distressed using this method.

Has anyone had any experience of this or know of anyone who has had this done after a c-section?

Have they done a vaginal swab to make sure you are infection free due to your waters being broken?

yes with first vbac. he was back to back and i wasn't getting anywhere so they put me on the drip. i did manage vb in the end.

my waters had gone naturally the day before - so they didn't make me wait as long as you!

They did yesterday, but not today. I have been taking my temperature regularly but that is that.

Hi
Yes I had this - previous Pre-eclampsia so high levelof monitoring anyway. Given drip once labour underway but had slowed down. My understanding is that some consultants will sllow it woth continuous monitoring & others won't - The consultant I saw when I was admitted said that she wouldn't induce, the consultant I saw the next day would drip attached & DD2 born 4 hrs later.

Thank you madwoman. Am glad you had a postive experience. I am just so nervous about this. I am so close to just saying give me a c-section and be over with it!

Hiya - just pulled out my notes (I'm going for a vbac this time too), and the NICE stats I was given when deciding between vbac and c/s:
risk of rupture:
elective c/s after previous c/s: 12 per 10,000
vbac 36 per 10,0000 (1 in 277)
oxytocin 87 per 10,000 (about the same as vba2c) (1 in 126)
prostaglandins 140 per 10,000

So the risk gets higher, but still quite small compared to all the other risks involved in vbac and c/s, and of course you'll be being monitored even more closely.... Hope it all kicks off naturally for you anyway - I'm fully expecting this to be me in a few weeks time, as went to 42 weeks last time as well . You could try a bit of acupuncture or reflexology as well maybe. Worth a go perhaps. good luck!

Hello first of all you are coping remarkably well being 6 days over due!! I was manking and moaning with each of my pregnancies (3) as my due date passed.

I had a very similar first birth experience to you, 2 weeks over, induced and then c- section for failure to progress, ( had a beautiful baby girl, now 4) My 2nd pregnancy was very similar my due date came and went I was desperate for a VBAC tried everything to start labour off as was told that they would not induce me. Their reasoning was connected with my first induction, as it had done little to aid the delivery of my daughter.
They would not budge on this and in the end I decided to keep positive and keep going.

I did go into labour myself and was fully dilated in 4 hours but my son was huge and I had another section.
My final pregnancy resulted in an elective section another beautiful girl.
My advice to you is stay positive, your body will decide at the end of the day how your baby arrives, you won't even think about it when they are teenagers!!! Good Luck

Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I am going to the hosp again today and will see what they suggest. I think I will go with the oxytocin drip (if that option is still available) as I will be thoroughly monitored throughout and if there is any sign of fetal distress then I will have another c-section.

I will keep you updated, thank you all again. Hearing other peoples experiences really helps!

Might be a little late to this, but I had an emergency c-section with ds (transverse oblique lie), and then like you really really wanted a VBAC (I had planned a homebirth with ds and felt very cheated).

With dd my waters broke early (as they had with ds) and nothing happened, I leaked for three days in the hope that something would kick off, and then on the third day was induced using a syntocin drip. It was the most scary horrible experience of my life, and I ended up with a c-section six hours later (no progression, and I just couldn't cope). So I would say just go with the section! I wish I had.

However I might have found ordinary labour too much, my first c-section was only 16mths earlier, and I had a very unsupportive midwife. I guess it could have all been different. I just felt very trapped (I absolutely hated the continuous monitoring) and out of control, and found gas and air did nothing for me (big disappointment!).

I do think it is important to not be so blinded by a wish to have a "proper birth" that you choose options that you would have otherwise rejected (syntocin is the one thing I was adamant to avoid first time around, but I had forgotten that by the time dd was on her way).

Good luck with whatever you choose, and I hope you have a good experience (and even more that you get going spontaneously).
