Meptid/Pethidine - does it always make you feel sick?

Just wondered if people could tell me their experiences of Meptid please, it seems like it makes people feel really sick, does that always happen?
I am a prospective home-birther and I have to pick up my Meptid prescription today, also anti-sickness and anti-acid drugs which make me think it's probably not going to make me feel that good if I decide to have it!

thanks in advance.

is pethadine the same thing? i didn't feel sick but i did feel like i was on another planet, speaking to dp after my daughters birth i obviously had no idea what was going on as he told me loads of things that i hadn't noticed.

All opiate drugs have the potential to make you feel sick, hence the anti-sickness drug which is ofetn given at the same time. Usually women having a homebirth do not need injected pain relief though as they are in the right environment for labour. Is there gas and air being brought by the midwives?

titmouse · 18/03/2009 10:23

yes they are bringing G&A, the meptid is only a very last resort, would rather have it in the house if it meant not being transferred to hospital. Didn't know it was an opiate!

I have had both pethidine and meptid and neither made me feel in the least bit sick. IIRC meptid was mentioned as an alternative to pethidine for those who found pethidine had unpleasant side-effects.

I just wanted to try both, drug junkie that I am!

titmouse · 18/03/2009 15:58

did you have both in the same labour??

thanks for the replies everybody!

LOL no sorry, it does look like that, doesn't it? I had pethidine with ds1, meptid with ds2, a failed epidural with dd and nothing at all with ds3. I also had G&A with all 4 of them but I did not see it as pain relief (it didn't seem to do anything for me) but more as a breathing aid/something to focus on.

Pethidine didn't make me feel sick. It made me loose the plot, won't be having that again!

Same here with Pethidine - I would definitely avoid it next time. I was away with the fairies, talking rubbish, and don't remember huge chunks of the experience, that I would really like to remember!

And most importantly, it didn't really stop the pain at all, so it was fecking pointless really!

I had 2 doses of Meptid in my last labour. It didn't make me feel sick at all and really helped me feel as though I could cope. I will request it again this time if I feel the need.

If it's the same as pethidine, it didn't make me feel sick at all, I was sick before I had it though! Apparently most women vom at some point. I wouldn't have it again though as DD was so sleepy, it was quite hard to breastfeed at first because she was so out of it. I also found it didn't really have much of an effect other than making me sleep between contractions.

i was offered meptid when i was struggling during my labour and it had no effect on me. my anaesthtist (how do you spell it?) said that it has the desired affect on a third of people, none on another third and makes the other third feel sick....

wideratthehips · 20/03/2009 18:14

....also i vomited about an hour after birth, even though i had an anti emetic
