Hi I am going to be having an elective cs after an emergency one 2 years ago - the only thing i hated about it was the morphine, I felt like i was on another planet and really dont want that again. Got app with consultant in a couple of weeks and want to do my homework before i go in ...so has anyony else had a cs with alternative pain relief? my other problem is i cant take anti inflamitories!

I didn't have morphine after DD2. I just felt I didn't need it so I refused it.

I didn't have morphine either as I didn't feel the need (also cannot take Diclofenac). How much pain were you in last time?

I'm sure the consultant will be able to advise you without you having to do any 'homework' in advance.

i was sore felt i needed something - just not morphine.

I'm exactly the same as you - the worst part of my emergency c-section was the morphine they INSISTED I keep taking every six hours for 24 hours after the op. I kept on being told that if I didn't then the pain would 'catch up with me'.

To this day I have no idea why I had to take it and I was so out of it that even though each time I protested and said I needed a clear head (DS was in SCBU in a serious condition) I gave in easily and thought they knew best.

The only thing I can think is perhaps the C-section didn't go as well as they hoped and perhaps they cut me in the wrong places inside?!

Anyway I have discussed all of this with my new midwives for this baby and it turns out that I don't need morphine at all. As previous posts have said, some people get by on nothing at all or just diclofenic and paracetamol.

I'm trying for a VBAC but if I do end up with a c-section then it's going to be all over my notes NO MORPHINE.

ShowOfHands · 15/03/2009 15:26

I had nothing post emergency section. The spinal block wore off in recovery and I had paracetamol at night a couple of times in the first week. Otherwise, nothing.

I didn't have morphine at all and had stopped taking the other meds before I came out. Mine was an elective so maybe different?

DisasterArea · 15/03/2009 15:43

you can use TENS after a c-section

MrsMattie · 15/03/2009 17:03

Morphine was optional when I had my both sections. We were dosed up with paracetomol and codeine every 4 hours, and offered morphine on request. I took it and bloody loved it!

FairLadyRantALot · 15/03/2009 17:12

my Birthplan stated that I did not want morphine (as I wanted to bf), even in case of C-section.
But, they must have given me it afterall...I didn't realise it at the time....but after the fact my legs were really itching as the spinal block wore of, and apparently that is the morphine that does it....I didn't know...

luckily still established bf well...

whoingodsnameami · 15/03/2009 17:22

I had morphine with an emergency c section, but that was because the surgeon had to be very rough as apparently my placenta was stuck, also I think perhaps they felt sorry for me as my epidural wore off suddenly half way through c section, and I could feel everything, was given a general anesthetic within seconds.

nellie12 · 15/03/2009 17:42

IV paracetamol is now widely used post op and is reportedly very effective so perhaps this is worth discussing with consultant?

needsomesleepplease · 15/03/2009 20:39

thanks very much for your help, I dont want to go to see consultant in a few weeks and be "rail roaded" into taking it again. Nellie the IV paracetamol would be great so i will def be discussing that with the consultant.
So fingers crossed all goes well and i dont need it again.

I has an elec C/S two weeks ago, they gave me diamorphine in theatre shortly after she was born, then a Diclofenac (Voltarol) suppository. Must admit I quite liked the Morphine - just lay in recovery half zonked with baby on boob for two hours! TBH, they made me lie on my side for those two hours and if I hadn't been a bit zonked I think I would have got fed up being stuck in one position all that time otherwise...

After that I was given Diclofenac and also Co-Codamol (paracetamol/codeine mix) which also made me feel zonked. I went to paracetamol soon as poss because I got fed up of the codeine making me feel spacy. Obviously you can't take the anti-inflamm's, so they will recommend Co-Codamol (or Co-dydramol) to you, it is a bit spacy as I said but nothing like the Morphine.

The most important thing is that your pain is under control, that way you will sleep better, recover better, and make more milk. So whilst you are looking for the right painkiller for you, don't sacrifice being comfortable so as not to feel spaced out. Putting up with the drugs you're not keen on for a couple of days might mean you rest and heal enough to switch to paracetamol earlier anyway??

Good luck and hope it's a lovely experience after your EMCS, I really enjoyed my elective.

JulesJules · 16/03/2009 11:09

I didn't have any morphine at all, just paracetamol, and I had to keep asking for that . Apparently I could have had codeine, but the midwife said "we don't like to give that in case you get constipation" . So I was a bit sore but it was bearable.

TuttiFrutti · 16/03/2009 11:38

I got morphine after my first (emergency) cs and loved it so much I asked for a second dose the next day, but was refused!

Second time round with my elective, it was never offered. I didn't need it either - just paracetamol.

It's certainly not compulsory. It didn't affect my breastfeeding either.
