I had my caesarean just over two weeks ago and the HV said yesterday I could start putting oil on anytime now. This morning I rubbed rosehip oil in but am now paranoid I'll cause an infection... The skin has been sealed since the op. How long did you wait please?

TIA!

I am sure it has to watered down!!!

I put pure teatree oil on mine, and ended up with a VERY painful skin burn!

my cs was 10 weeks ago and i wasn't told anything about oil..

anyway, i just left it along and its healed uo lovely. its barly visably now.

whats this oil supposed to do anyway?

Lotster · 14/03/2009 14:59

it's this stuff

I've used it on scars before and it really diminishes them, it's got lots of essential fatty acids, plus the rubbing action helps to reduce the scar tissue build up.

So basically I'm quite confident about using it, but just not sure when is too soon - I know 2 weeks is early but one side is already going a little lumpy...

Had a caesarean 16 months ago and wasnt told anything about any oil. Dont think I would have rubbed anything on it anyway, makes me feel squeamish to touch it! Even now a little bit. Has healed really well though just a thin white line now.
Lotster my scar went a bit thicker and lumpy on one side, its fine now though, Im sure you will be the same.

I'd never considered putting oil on my scar but luckily it's already well healed and fading fast after 5.5mo.

Personally I'd want to wait until after the 6 week check to make sure it is healing correctly 1st.

I had my section 9 weeks ago and like others here, nobody mentioned anything about oil. I just left it to heal naturally and it's doing well.

When does the overhang go?

Thanks for all of your replies, not had much time to check back until now as baby has kept me busy!

Good to hear the lumpiness can come and go. Might just leave it for a while then.

I used rosehip oil on my scar (from organic pharmacy - not sure if it's the same one in your link as I can't seem to access it off my useless laptop....). Anyway, I started rubbing oil into my scar as soon as it was healed. This was six weeks in my case as I had a haematoma behind my scar and it was open at one end and leaking blood until 6 weeks post partum (I'm sure you can guess how much fun THAT was.....). As soon as the scar was closed I started with the oil. Very gently at first as I was very squeamish about it and rather terrified as it had been open and the skin surrounding it was incredibly bruised from the haematoma. However, if I hadn't had these problems I probably would have started at around 3 weeks as I read that it was around this time that all the internal cuts/scars started to come together and heal.

I rubbed gently and increased the pressure over time and it helped. I still put bio oil on it twice a day (over two years later) and it looks good considering the mess I was in post-birth.

Personally I think two weeks is probably still a little soon as things are still coming together internally. However, once the external scar is fully sealed I would imagine gently smoothing rosehip oil over it would be very beneficial. You could then start adding pressure from six weeks or earlier if you felt fully healed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks kit that's really helpful. Interesting to get the three week info! The oil is Rio Rosa. Sounds like you had a tough time with yours, glad it's all good now.
