lotus birth

for those of you who don't know, lotus birth is where you keep the placenta and cord attached to the baby until it drops off naturally.

has anyone done this after their birth experience? Could I ask why? And did it achieve what you wanted it to achieve?

Friend, whom I plan to be a birthing partner to, wants to practise this and I would like to know more about it.

Fascinating.

Hbu is now my Maori name.

Aio ki te aorangi

Kiwifruit · 18/04/2005 14:21

Yes, HBU is a very common Maori name

Doesn't the placenta start to degrenerate at around 40 weeks, and that's why they don't let you go much beyond 2 weeks over due?? Surely this can't be good for the baby??

my favourite lecturer has emailed me to say that she'd be surprised if there was any critical research on this.

her concern is the infection risks: "the placenta would be rank within 48 hrs and attracting flies, remember that the vessel goes to the liver and the risk of septicaemia must be present"

Will do more research tonight...

Actually teabelly, the placenta can apparently last for a year, it's just there's a natural rise in stillbirth's the longer the gestation...

On another note, my dad was apoplectic with disgust when he was asked by the midwife if he would like to "bond with my placenta!"

I can picture his face now, bless him he was only 26!

NomDePlume · 18/04/2005 14:42

I would be having serious reservations about it, especially since reading the statement from your lecturer.

teabelly · 18/04/2005 14:51

...oh ok Oatcake - still sounds abit yuck to me

hub2dee · 18/04/2005 15:24

Kiwifruit: Do you live in NZ or UK ? I'd be happy to move out there, but dw feels it's too isolated from family in Europe / the States and somewhat weak on the arts (theatre / opera / galleries / multi-culturalism) etc. etc. would you tend to agree / disagree with her ? So I don't hijack oatcake's Big Placenta Debate - may I direct you here - where I'm chit chatting with RTKANGAmummy. You two must promise to fight nicely though.

suzywong · 18/04/2005 15:36

It just isn't right is it

blood vessel goes to the liver

can you imagine with all the stuff there is to do with a new baby having to care for a placenta as well

oatcake · 19/04/2005 22:10

have looked and can't find any proper evidence-based research to support lotus birth...

oh well, I'll just have to put up with a stinky baby for 24 hours before I go home...

I know this is an old thread but I just saw it, I know several people who have had lotus birth.... it si not very common but you just ahve to kow where to look and who to ask
The women who have done it would all do it again and they had their own reasons for doing it.
