39.5 weeks and think baby is breech again do i need to inform anybody?

Hi there i am quite new here so hope posting on the correct forum.
I am 39.5 weeks today and sure for the past week my baby has turned back breech.. does anybody know how I tell for sure what is a head or a bum. A few people have had a little prod and three have said he is laying across me not breech.

I have been monitored throughout my pregnancy for my age but also because he is a big baby. hE WAS BREECH UP TO 38 WEEKS AND THEN he turned. He is a big baby and just off the scale. The question I need to ask do I need to ring the antenatal department to tell them I think he is breech as do not have an appointment now until the 19th.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

I would give them a ring and speak to a midwife. They really won't mind you calling.

Lulumama · 09/03/2009 13:17

if your baby is breech or transverse, you do really need to have that confirmed before you go into labour, especially if transverse, as you will absolutely have to a c.s, whereas with a breech, you can ask for a vaginal birth.

i would call the AN or labour ward

orangehead · 09/03/2009 13:17

I would say say ring as well. No harm to ring

Seeline · 09/03/2009 13:18

I would certainly ring your MW and ask her advice. I think it's very hard for a non-professional to tell in what position a baby is lying just from prodding your bump. When I was pg first time, everyone, including the GP was convinced he was breech, although MW said no. They sent me for a scan, and MW was right. However, pg2, DD was transverse and no-one could work that out until I had a scan. Good luck.

Big babies and a breech presentation have higher risks associated birth risks. Most units offering vaginal births for breech presentations have guidelines advising vaginal delivery is not advisable if the estimated birth weight is above 3.8/4kg and recommend ECV or a CS in such cases. I would not wait until the 19th! You should be able to self refer to your local hospital's Day Assessment Unit. Most of the time they should be able to gt you scanned easily to confirm the presentation.

I was kept in hospital when my scan showed the baby was tranverse - not even allowed to go home and get things! I had no idea! I was about 35 weeks at the time. It can be very dangerous if you start labour and the baby is transverse. If there is any doubt, please present yourself to your local hospital for an emergency scan. Good luck with everything. I'm sure it will all be good, just best to keep your hospital alerted. x

i agree with all the other posters, please call the hospital now. I've had two breech babies

Academicmum · 09/03/2009 20:00

If there is a possibility of transverse they will want you in hospital. This happened with ds1 (I had to go in from 38 weeks until they did the c-section at 39 weeks) and with ds2 he was transverse at 36 weeks and they said if he didn't turn by 37 weeks they'd have me in hospital with c-section at 38 weeks. Thankfully ds2 turned but the reason they keep you in is that it can be dangerous for you and baby if transverse. Not least because there is a chance that the cord can come out first and baby will be inside with no oxygen supply from cord.

hello all.. been to midwife and she says the head is just sitting on the pelvis so no need to worry. I am 40 weeks on Saturday. Thanks all for help and time and trouble!

good news. lets hope it happens for you soon and that baby just pops out

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 11/03/2009 22:37

babyalfie - 3 midwives told me mine was head down when I thought he was breech. They would not scan me and he turned out to be breech (he actually end up being a footling breech which is even more high risk but they didn't discover this until I was 8cm). If you are not 100% sure please kick up a fuss and ask for a scan.

Feeling your bump is an art not a science even for professionals.

babyalfie · 12/03/2009 13:05

oh thanks.. i am sure he is breech or across me. I think I will ring up again as the midwife was very unsure and she said the head was just laying there and was moveable. I am 40 weeks today and still no sign of my baby- wish there was. Thanks all for advise.

I'd agree there with Libras. With ds1 I was telling them from 7 months that he was definately transverse (I could feel his head poking out), but they insisted he was head down. When I enventually got the scan I kicked up a fuss to get (at 38 weeks) lo and behold he was transverse. They tried to say he must have turned that way (unstable lie) but I know that he hadn't budged an inch!

MrsJamin · 12/03/2009 13:45

My midwife was totally wrong too, told me DS was the right way up- the GP got the breech diagnosis right! If you're not sure get a scan as you don't want to find out when you're in labour.

MrsJamin · 12/03/2009 13:46

if your midwife won't help any further just contact the hospital directly - as they will want to be sure what position your DC is in - they will be the ones who will be impacted if your DC is breech.

babyalfie · 12/03/2009 18:10

ok I am sure I have a head at one side and can feel it. I did go for a can a few weeks ago and he was head down and knew that as I also started to go to the loo every hour in the night and this continued for a few days after. My last son was transverse and as kept in hospital for 2 weeks in case I went into labour but he turned at the last minute. I get no kicks at all high up and all movement at the side or down below... thanks agin for taking time to reply to me.

So what are you going to do? Sounds like you need a scan to be sure.

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 16/03/2009 09:39

Do you think she had the baby?

MrsJamin · 16/03/2009 17:18

yes - maybe - I'm intrigued what happened! one post said she was having mild contractions on friday morning.
