Good ideas for presents for a new mum

DSIL is expecting her second (a girl!) at the moment and I didn't want to spend lots of money on clothes or whatever that would only be worn once and put away. I did think that I could make up a small hamper and fill it with pink iced fairy cakes, homemade truffles and my special recipe choc-chip cookies. Would this go down well with a tired mum and dad?

Anyone got any other ideas?

Bloody hell, do you want to make me one of those in a couple of weeks?!

Honestly, that sounds like a wonderful gift, esp since it's her second child and will aleady have a lot of the baby type stuff. Maybe you could add in a few 'forbidden' foods if you like as well eg, brie, pate, bottle of wine or some nice bubble bath etc

What a lovely SIL you are!

Yes it sounds great but I second the idea about taking a meal too. I've just started doing that for all of my friends who have dc and it goes down so well every time (especially well if I include pudding too!)

Sounds absolutely wonderful - so many people focus on gifts for the baby only and forget about poor old mum who could definitely use a bit of pampering - I received some lovely bubblebath, body cream and choccies from a friend which I really appreciated when I had DS1 - hoping that this time round most of the gifts will be for me and not DS2 when he comes since I have everything for him anyway and REALLY REALLY am in need of some TLC!

I'm about to have DC2, so I can maybe suggest it from her point of view: I would love some pampering stuff for me like Burts Bees bath stuff (non toxic and smells lovely), or Lush stuff, as it is nice to have something for the mum as well as the baby, as others said above.

BUT what would be really kind and is such a blessed relief, as others have said, is to take a meal round, especially thing for now and one for the freezer. Or take their first child out for the afternoon. that's the kind of thing I will really miss! (we live abroad). It's those first few weeks where you're starving hungry and exhausted, and something like a pre-made spag bol just brings tears of relief to your eyes! It's those practical things that are so impossible when you've just had a baby...

Sounds like a fab gift. The best stuff I got given after DS1's birth was lots of lovely chocs to eat - made a lovely change from all the gifts for the baby...

Definitely some home-made food, that's a fab idea.

2 things I have found useful as a new mum- touch eclat (or No 7 equivalent) and dry shampoo! I am quite vain though

Your choc chip cookies sound ace
