Labour scenario planning - what if I went into labour suddenly

I'm having an induction at 38 weeks, so probably not going to happen, but I am high risk and a relatively fast labourer (is birth no. 3), so wouldn't have much time if I went into labour suddenly.

If I were out in town say with my DS (3yo) and no-one else, and needed to get an ambulance, what would happen to DS? Would he come in the ambulance with me? And who would look after him at the hospital while waiting for someone to come and get him? Anyone had this happen, or work as paramedic / police / midwife and know what would be done?

I had a similar question when i was expecting DD. I had no one to watch DS and the midwife said just bring him in. Someone would watch him. As it happened i didn't need to, but don't worry they aren't going to leave your DS outside the ambulance in a strange place!

Thanks, strictmum; that's very helpful to know.

No way would they leave your DS and nor would they not transfer you until he had a babysitter. Don't be daft!

Sorry!! Somehow had visions of him being taken off by the Police, which don't really make sense in the cold light of day.

You always take your kids in with you and the hospital then worries about them, and calls a relative.

I had this when I needed to go to the Fetal Monitoring Unit urgently with a toddler in tow - they gave him Lego to play with and biscuits for the duration. It happens quite often, I think.

A friend of mine had her stepdaughter with her when waters broke in the street and pretty much went into labour immediately. Hospital called play specialist from children's ward to entertain her as mum refused to pick her up . She stayed with her for several hours until dad had arranged alternative care. Basically, hospital has responsibility to ensure children are cared for, as do police, ambulance etc...so that's one thing you dont need to worry about.
