I am 40 weeks today, ive had a awful cough for about a week, earlier i coughed and wet myself (just a little lol ) so i go and change my undies and sort myself out and while sat on the bed i felt a wet patch, it didnt feel like i had wee'd again - but then when i sat back down i cough again and pee'd again , i could'nt even see what colour it was or anything, because the sheets are dark brown. Im not sure what to do? (if anything) i would feel daft calling my MW and telling her all this!!

I was in Mackays shopping for baby towels when this happened to me I was sure it as my waters but I could see that it was a weird colour, although the MW told me it was just wee, I went into labour a week later to be told that there was very little water when they broke them and they asked if they ahd already gone I explained and they said yes that's what it would have been, so get chcked out they've seen it all before

HTH.

IIRC, amniotic fluid smells sweet, urine smells um.. well, you know.
Your midwife can do a swab to see.

BoffinMum · 25/02/2009 15:01

If your waters go they tend to keep oozing out and you won't be able to control it in anyway, but if it's just wee then it will be a one-off.

Just pop a maternity pad on and monitor the situation.

I thought I'd wet myself when my waters broke. I'd just been to the loo (I seemed to be going every 15 minutes by the end so it seemed a natural conclusion that I'd become incontinent!) I'd always thought that when your waters break it happens with a gush, but in fact my midwife told me the baby's head acts a bit like a cork. I went into labour 24 hours later, but I went to the hospital straight away as had been advised to do this during ante-natal classes on the basis that the baby is more vulnerable to infection once your waters break (gave birth in France where there is a general horror of microbes so not sure if the advice is the same in Britain).

Get a pint glass, sit on the loo with it under you, and cough. Amniotic fluid is sort of straw coloured with lots of little bits in it.

I spent some time trying to persuade myself that my waters breaking was terrible incontinence...

BoffinMum · 25/02/2009 15:20

That's a good idea cmot.

scrooged · 25/02/2009 15:20

That's gross!!!

cmotdibbler · 25/02/2009 15:30

Yup. Especially if you leave a pint of it on the bathroom windowsill whilst you go to phone the hospital, get whipped in (I was 35 weeks) and your DH comes home much, much later to find it there

scrooged · 25/02/2009 15:33

At least he wasn't drunk at the time and mistook it for cider

jabberwocky · 25/02/2009 15:34

My waters broke with both dcs. Anytime I did any type of exertion they leaked more iykwim. With ds1 it was the little bit at a time. With ds2 it was big gushes!

BoffinMum · 25/02/2009 15:35

OMG!!
I did leave the caul from one of the DSs on the kitchen windowsill for a while, much to the bafflement of our cleaner.
It started to smell funny so I had to throw it out ...

When I had a little gush at 39 weeks I was so hoping it was my waters. It wasn't. I had actually wet myself. DH was most amused.

weepootle · 25/02/2009 16:37

I had a cough from about 32 weeks and had to wear a sanitary pad as I leaked lots with every cough & sneeze. I thought it must be because the baby had dropped- affecting my pelvic floors, I asked the MW and she said, yes it would just be wee- though I never felt like it was coming from there.

Eventually, at 38 weeks I had a scan showing almost no amniotic fluid and a very small baby . They must have been slowly leaking for some time as dd2 was only the size of a 30 week old when born since she'd been so compressed by lack of water.

With dd1 my waters went with a mega gush... and just kept gushing all the way to hospital.
