Silly question re after the baby is born and going to bathroom

This is a bit of a silly question but after the baby is born and you are back on the ward and DH has gone home etc, given that baby is supposed to stay with you all the time, if you need to pop to the loo or have a shower or whatever, what do you do with the baby?

I thought that the cots were on wheels so you could push them around and take them with you but given that toilets/bathrooms aren't that big, is this expected? Also, the hospital showers tend to be on a flat so floor can get soaking rather than being a traditional cubicle - all sounds a bit of a mess if you have baby in there too.

I wouldn't have thought that the midwives would have time to be looking after the babies when all the mums are heading back and forth to the bathrooms? Or do you ask the mum in the next bed to keep an eye?

We had to leave baby and not take in dinning area or you could not have a hot meal! Left him to shower and woman opposite watched him for me. Was fine.

Good question, bet loads of other people wanted to ask.

When dd was born, the midwives insisted on babies going everywhere with the mothers. So, the day after a c-section, I had to manoeuvre her cot down the hall to the bathroom at the end of the corridor every time I wanted a wee while dragging a drrain on a stand as well. Then they sent me for a kidney scan and I had to take her all the way across the hospital with the drain because they couldn't find a porter. I was found weeping in the corridor by a kind nurse who helped me there and back.

When ds was born, I insisted on leaving after 6 hours (VBAC). Left him with dh while I showered, and with another mother while I went to the loo.

At my hospital you leave them to go for a wee, bath, and meals as long as you can walk. I didn't like it at all.

The halfwits (NOT an exagerration)in the 2 beds next to me kept going down 2 floors in the lift to have a fag, and asked me to watch their babies. They also went for very long baths, which was a relief as their loud waffling really peed me off. I said yes, but as I was catheterised for many of the times they asked and couldn't have picked up my own baby from the crib next to me easily, I could only scream if someone tried to nick them anyway.

I can't even remember thinking about this at all, and no-one mentioned it. I think I just left ds by my bed when I went to the toilet, and waited for dp to visit until I had a shower.
