Has anyone read 'Childbirth Without Fear'? What did you think?

I always panic in transition and was wondering if this would help.

Me too. I am doing a hypnobirthing course because of this but maybe I should read this book. I have been meaning to.

TBH I think nearly everyone panics. Apparently last time I said "I am not doing this" and everyone just said "Yes you are". My mw said this is typical.

But it's doable. Just.

I think mentally I try to stop myself giving birth when it comes to it. It is ridiculous but I don't think I was even aware of it last time. Although the second time was relatively easier I still think I could do a lot to improve and not resist.

Birth Reborn by Michael Odent is lovely. Sadly the reality doesn't match the birthing units he describes but it is inspiring.

Thanks OrmIrian. I'm 32 weeks so feel that I need to get any reading / preparation in now before it's too late!

I am with you on that, Electra. It's the knowledge that I am about to hurt my lady bits! Yet again! I am currently also trying a bit of rehearsal via visualisation like sports people do.

I read it for DS2's birth and in hindsight, really wished I'd read it beore DS1's birth. I found it a really interesting read and knowing what was happening physiologically found DS2's birth much easier as a result (didnt panic at any stage) - and found myself really grounded through transition too (not sure if it was the reading, the hypnobirthing, being in water or just having my head in the right place for this birth - but whatever it was, it worked for me).

electra · 18/02/2009 20:28

Well this is all sounding very good. I don't want to panic when I'm in labour and this time I'm determind not to!

Who wrote this book? I think I need to read it! Am 35 wks pg with dc4 and absolutely terrified of the pain, First 2 times had diamorphine which did ease the pain a bit but drugged me so much that I couldn't feel to push and wasn't able to hold baby afterwards either time as i would have drooped it being sooo drugged I could hardly stay awake. So 3rd time had water birth and gas and air which was better in every respect except that can still remember extreme pain and feelings of panic and am now terrified!! Can I get this book from borders or Waterstones or do I rder it online?

Yes, definitely! I am a HypnoBirthing teacher and think this book should be compulsory reading for all pregnant mums.

If it's only transition you are worried about it might be worth you contacting a HypnoBirthing practitioner and asking if they can do a one off "hypnotherapy fear release" session with you regarding this specific fear, it shouldn't take long or cost much. You can find someone near you here www.hypnobirthing.co.uk

I've almost finished it and yes, it's well worth reading. He does go on a bit (why use 5 words when you can use 500?)but his description of what happens to the uterus in labour, and the effects of adrenaline and oxytocin on it is fantastic.

BonyM · 17/03/2009 21:17

Amazing book. I have just finished reading it and although it is not the easiest read ever, it explains the birth process and the reasons why labour can be painful extremely well.

I found it fascinating and enlightening and agree that it should be compulsory reading for all pregnant women.

I am now looking forward to giving birth to number 3, rather than dreading it.
