Hi guys

My due date was yesterday (!) and am just having anothe think about my birth plan.

I would like a physiological 3rd stage. My last 2 labours involved no drugs or induction, until the 3rd stage when I had syntometrine. Then later anti-D.

Due to the problem with bloods mixing, am I able to deliver the placenta naturally, not having the cord clamped etc, or is there a problem with this?

Any advice gratefully received! Have been googling but cannot get a straight answer.

I'm RHneg and have had 2 babies with natural third stage, nobody ever mentioned that there was a prob - I think you have a while to have the anti-D afterwards (48 or 72 hrs, but check that).

I had homebirth both times so had to pop to the clinic the next day to get the jab. Good luck and hope that baby arrives soon

Thanks :-) Did they clamp the cord in your cases RhinestoneCowgirl? If they didn't, the fact that the bloods mix may not be a prob to the mum as we have anti-D, but is it a problem for the baby?

Am VERY confused!!

I am rh neg. We've left the cord till it stopped pulsating before cutting it, and had a natural third stage. No probs. I had anti-D afterwards. You can have anti-D at home if you get a prescription for the mw.

BoffinMum · 16/02/2009 19:40

It's not a problem for the mum, only your next baby if the father is rh+.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/02/2009 19:43

Cord was left to pulsate before being clamped and cut.

Boffinmum mw was v definite both times that anti-D had to be given at the surgery as they had resus equipment.

BoffinMum · 16/02/2009 20:34

Bizarre.
I have never been to the surgery for anti-D. mw does it around here, and that was the same in London when I was there.

Same as BoffinMum. Cord stopped pulsating before they cut, natural third stage, midwife gave anti-D at home couple of days after when they had confirmed that dd was rh pos.

But midwife only did it after I mentioned to her boss (whilst discussing something unrelated) that I was popping out to get anti-D! She pointed out how ridiculous that was as I'd just given birth at home and rearranged things so I was given the anti D at home by CM.

Like BoffinMum said the risk is to subsequent babies, not to you or this baby. In fact if this is your last baby there is no need to have the anti D...

BoffinMum · 17/02/2009 17:38

No you should have it IMO in case there's an accident. Unless you're having your equipment removed, so to speak. Who knows what could happen in the future?

BoffinMum · 17/02/2009 17:39

Also you shouldn't really be leaving the house 2-3 days after having a baby. You should be ensconced at home resting, tbh. This is not about the convenience of the MW!

I've had four natural third stages and am rh -ve
