I borrowed one when I had DD but don't have the option to this time so I'm completely baffled by the choice on offer and wonder if anyone can recommend a good strong one! I am hoping to hire rather than buy.

A link would be lovely [cheeky] thanks

I used Natures Gate
was good service and not too expensive

Was about a million years ago though.

I used tens-hire.co.uk, very efficient and reasonably priced

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 13/02/2009 12:33

Did you find they were useful? Did they have a boost button?

zoejeanne · 13/02/2009 16:27

I thought the tens did a great job, I put it on as soon as I went into labour and used the boost button and increased the power as labour increased. Later on the midwife suggested it wouldn't be as effective by that stage and suggested I remove it - I did and the pain from the contractions increased dramatically, so it clearly was still effective.

However friends of mine have said it was just annoying, so I guess everyone is different

Thanks everyone. Does anyone know if they have different strengths? I want a super pain zapping model.

Musthaveaveryshortmemory, I found it a really effective form of pain relief in my first labour. I had it on way before I'd even got my first contraction which may have helped. (I put it on as soon as I had a show in the early morning and had my first contraction at 11pm) All day it kept the period pain type aches at bay and the boost button is a great way of focussing your attention when having a contraction.

I used the Boots Tens Hire, and it was fantastic. Lasted me through til the birth and i would have killed anybody who tried to take it from me.

boost button, different strengths (remember to ramp it up).

Just practice changing the batteries - mine crapped out minutes after the birth..

duvetheaven · 14/02/2009 20:18

Hired the Boots Tens machine which worked well and was approx £50 - you can have it for 6 weeks. Good luck.

chrysanthamumm · 14/02/2009 21:20

I used New Road Clinic www.newroadclinic.co.uk/hire1.htm - hire period 6 weeks (extendable if nec'y), delivered 3 weeks pre-EDD for £18.50. Worked well, had variable power levels plus a boost if i remember correctly. Needed to change batteries about every 8 hours once using at the highest power. Did eventually need an epidural but it took me through 50+ hours of contractions/induction.

2 different friends (no connection) recommended Elle Tens and leant me theirs and I although I only (unfortunately) got access to one half way through I was very impressed with it.

gingerninja · 15/02/2009 18:38

Many thanks for your feedback. Chrysanth. very much in awe of your managing 50 hours of contractions!

Thanks for the tips ladies - I have just hired an elle tens through NCT link.

Had to pay extra for the next day delivery as I have been a bit lax and left it to 38 weeks to get organised. Whoops! In my defence, I am still in denial about the whole birth thing - although, perhaps that isn't a great defence...?

MinkyBorage · 19/02/2009 21:23

That's the one I used for both births and it was fab! Good choice
