Hi,5 weeks after my dd's birth I haemmorhaged so heavily at home I ended up in the back of an ambulance with the sirens going and admitted for erpc. It was due to a retained placenta. I understand that if it happens once there's a higher risk of it happening again- I'm 9 weeks pregnant and scared!

Bumping for you. I hope you get some reassurance. Congrats on your pregnancy.

I had a retained placenta with number 2 but not number 3.

I had a retained placenta with dd1 and 2 now 23 weeks pregnant with number 3!
I asked the consultant if it was going to happen again, he said higher percentage but not definate. When i asked what percentage he said under 50%. Think i am just going to think it is going to happen then hopefully if is doesn't will be an added bonus
Not to say it will happen with you, know people who have had a retained placenta then gone on to have a normal delivery next time.
They are being prepared this time and attaching a venflon as soon as i arrive so they can get drips etc up asap.

Hi there, I completely understand your fears and found unless health professionals had direct experience they were very dismissive of my fears. I was told it would be a 50% chance of it happening again, because of this the consultant gave permission for a c-section for my next 2 births.
I'm not sure if this thread is relevant, but there was another discussion on here recently here

Thankyou for your responses, PuzzleRocks you're very kind to bump like you do!
I'll speak to the mw this week and make sure my concerns are clear and bold on my notes!

2many, what you are describing is a secondary PPH caused by retained products, not a retained placenta (so some of the placenta was left behind)therefore the statistics of 50/50 aren't relevent to your situation. I would make sure that the midwife that attends your birth inspects the placenta fully (they should do this) to make as sure as possible there are no parts left behind (there is always a very small chance that somthing may be missed) and to do this infornt of you and talk you through it to reassure you as best they can.

Personally I'd want to know more about the cause of your retained placenta last time. There are many reasons for retained placenta, one of the big ones being having a managed third stage (ie, injection of syntometrine). You cannot make an assessment of a risk factor without knowing the full facts. To do so would be to not be looking at it holistically.

Oh, crap crap crap. I had a retained placenta (first baby, not thinking about a second just yet) with a dramatic delivery room scene of the cord snapping. No cord blood bank for me!
