VBA2C or 3rd c section... which is statistically safer?

Ok... this question is very very tentative, I am newly preg and have many more obstacles to overcome before I should even think about its arrival BUT its been plaguing (sp?) me!!! What is genuinely the safer option - a 3rd c section or a vba2c? First c section 'emergency' for failure to progress, 2nd was 'elective' (2 weeks overdue, prostin not working and I refused syntocin). There would be 17 months between last c section and next baby due. I have had a quick look at internet but not come across much and thought people here would prob know best. Just wondering which is actually the safer option?

I've just had a VBA2C and from the researh that I've done I concluded that a natural birth would be much safer, for both me and baby than another section. I did come up against lots of opposition to it though and had to fight for the intervention free labour i wanted, but I hired a doula and she helpd me find a consultant who was happy for me to foregoe continual fetal monitoring. I needed help in the end and had an epesiotomy and forceps, but the labour was fantastic and all I could have hoped for.

There is a thread on here called imminent vbacers support thread that has lots of good advice and links. I'll see if I can find it for you after I've put my DD to bed

Congratulations on your pregnancy

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 24/01/2009 18:33

aha....I'm here already

NaturalBornThreadKiller · 24/01/2009 18:35

i have just snorted at the pc daisy

MrsMattie · 24/01/2009 18:35

I didn't know your VBAC was a VBA2C, Daisy. Fabulous! Well done

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 24/01/2009 18:41

Thanks MrsM .

You'll find some information here paranoidmummy. there are good links on page 2 od the thread, or near the top/bottom depending which format you are viewing MN in. Lots of inspiring stories as well.

right, better get to my DD before she chokes on her supper

paranoidmummy · 26/01/2009 18:14

Thanks daisy have added them all to my favourites for when I need them

can i ask how long it had been between your previous section and vba2c?

LackaDAISYcal · 26/01/2009 18:19

It was only seventeen months!!!!

paranoidmummy · 26/01/2009 18:27

wow! That is amazing daisy. Really amazing, you should be incredibly proud of yourself. I shall definitely keep a vba2c in mind now provided this one's a keeper. Still very early days.

Would you mind me asking why you had sections previously? Had you ever gone into spontaneous labour? I never have (waters started trickling with ds1 but contractions needed to be induced and ds2 was having NONE OF IT!) which is why I worry I will hold out and then just end up with another section at 42 weeks anyway!!

Any evidence around this is not statistically significant because of the numbers involved. Very few women actually attempt VBA2C so the numbers are not large enough to be reliable.

I've heard Obstetricians quote the risks of uterine rupture as anything varying between the same as those for having had one c/s (1:200) to saying that it's double that.

LackaDAISYcal · 26/01/2009 18:45

I was induced at 12 days overdue with DS, and although my waters broke naturally, I developed a rim of cervix which swelled, as I was told to push through it . DS got stuck and they thought forceps, but did the CS in the end. It was a very horrible experience, with me pushing for about 6 hours before they took me into theatre.

Fast forward five years and I considered a VBAC with DD, but got cold feet pretty late on. Combined with the fact that DH was working away from home, an elective section seemed the obvious choice. I did try and hire a doula but left it too late so opted for the elective.

So, when I got pregnant again, because it was unplanned I kind of saw it as my last chance to do it as nature intended. I hired a doula when I was only three months and she was great. She helped me change hospitals and get in with the consultant most likely to be amenable (who had herself had two water births). She was the lead consultant so her endorsement in my notes was great.

I'll dig out my birth story for you in a mo.

The thing to remember is that they can't make you do anything you don't want to do. There is also limited information on VBA2C as well so hospitals tend to just double the risks attached to a VBA1C, but it doesn't quite work like that. My take on it was the optimum would be a totally intervention free birth, but that I would consider any necessary interventions as and when they arose, but didn't want to go belts and braces on the slim chance that something would go wrong.

It was certainly an experience that I'm glad I had, inspite of the new experience of piles, stitches, mashed pelvic floor and mild incontinence issues

LackaDAISYcal · 26/01/2009 18:48

Here you are. It's a bit long!

When are you due?

ticklytum · 27/01/2009 09:03

hi paraniodmummy. My siuation the same failed induction first time ended up with elective the next day, second failed to progress in labor ended up with emergency section. now they def pushing me to have 3rd cs i have booked for 39 weeks (my request baby way too big) but if i go into labor before i will attempt def a vba2c.

paranoidmummy · 27/01/2009 13:01

That story was amazing daisy. It must be so wonderful to be able to say you did it!I'm not due until Sept, to be honest this is very very forward thinking of me but I just really want to know what my options are before I meet with a consultant etc. I know I'm jumping the gun somewhat but I wanted all the evidence under my belt.

Your story sounds so very similar to mine! ds1 was induced and I also developed the rim where he got stuck which led to c section. 5 years later I had ds2, firstly hoping for vbac but at 2 weeks over i just lost my nerve. Now, unexpectedly, I am preggers again and will be due 17 months after my last section. Bit spooky!!! Were you on time with your vba2c?

good luck ticklytum... when are u due?

ooooh, spookily scary

I went into spontaneous labour 6 days before my due date. AS I'd never gone into labour on my own before, I was still wondering whether I was actually in labour shortly before my waters broke. Got to the hospital less than an hour later and I was 6cms dilated

ticklytum · 28/01/2009 16:53

im due in 6 weeks 13 march but booked a elective section at 39weeks, but hoping to labor before that. way too big for dates cant do anything got two youngsters to look after. cant drive at all.

vbacqueen1 · 04/02/2009 14:42

Hi ticklytum - just wanted to ask how big for dates you are? It's worth knowing that the more caesareans you have, the more likely it is that you'll measure "large for dates". Scans are a very very unreliable means of predicting weight too.

My VBA3C baby measured a full 6 weeks ahead of dates all the way through. She was a decent weight, admittedly, but not too big at 9lbs 10oz for my 5'2" frame to get out ;)

ticklytum · 06/02/2009 17:51

im 6 weeks too, ahead for dates had big babies before but also carrying alot of water this time. my dd weighed 9.12lbs and im 5.2ft also
