Low GI snacks for during labour

Anyone think of any? I have gestational diabetes which is well under control through diet but the MW told me my blood sugar levels are crucial during labour. I will probably need sustenance at some point - has anyone been through this and can suggest some things I can have to hand to nibble on? i was planning to make a big batch of lentil soup but the MW said there's a large chance i won't fancy it (still planning to make it though just in case).

it's my 1st baby so therefore my 1st labour.

Ta!

Im not very up on GI but after 3 labours, my experience was that I didn't watn to eat anything at all.

Eveyrbody's different though so I guess you might

if you give me an idea of low GI foods, I could maybe suggest some stuff?

Can the midwife advise you?

ExtraFancy · 23/01/2009 12:57

Nairn's oatcakes are low GI and easy on the stomach

chocoholic · 23/01/2009 12:59

I bought all sorts of snacks / lollies etc for my labour and didn't have a thing. Forgot they were there until I got home!

If you want something to nibble how about some crackers or toast?

MKG · 23/01/2009 13:02

Maybe you could try some nuts with dried fruit. Easy to pack and no mess.

hard boiled eggs, celery sticks, cherry toms, laughing cow triangles, packs of cooked bacon strips (available in supermarkets) yoghurt, and cooked chicken bits. Really dark chocolate tends to be fairly low GI too.

fab! Thanks Lisey and everyone!

I had GD and asked this question of my consultant, he said at that point it didn't matter what I ate, I went wild Mars bars, Ribena, Yorkies, cheese cake..... yum.

plantsitter · 23/01/2009 15:45

God really? I am so craving one of those cupcakes with outrageously tall icing. Pink. But my mw was pretty adamant. Perhaps she is just a sadist!

I think she may just be a meanie , is your GD diet or insulin controlled? If it is diet there is no reason not to indulge during labour, you keep your levels under control during pg to stop the baby from growing too large, there is no way bub is going to have some kind of mahoosive growth spurt during even the longest labour, it is far more important that you keep your energy levels up.

every fortnight when I was pg I used to eat something I shouldn't, not do a blood test and make up a result .

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 15:51

Sorry you said diet in your op, it will be fine really.

plantsitter · 23/01/2009 15:55

I have been very occasionally eating lentil soup with a wholesome roll, doing the test with a very worthy result and THEN eating the bad thing so it never shows up.

Baby is normal size though. I think she was worried about the baby having low sugar levels or high insulin levels or something. I'm having a home birth so I think I'll do what she says and then at a big bowl of buttercream icing afterwards!

And a can of coke, and a big bag of cheesy Wotsits.

I had a packet of M and S brownies after and a huge cup of tea, bliss. Good luck.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/01/2009 15:59

Oh and in case you are contemplating doing it all again, I didn't get it the second time.

plantsitter · 23/01/2009 16:03

Thanks for the luck! It's good to hear I might not get it again but frankly I am NOT contemplating it. Well, not yet

Nairns do some very nice low GI ginger biscuits which are wrapped in packets of six. They're really good for combating sickness too.

Failing that, Rick Gallop's website for GI diets has some great muffin recipes.

reluctantincubator · 24/01/2009 21:33

mini oatcakes wth various toppings. humous, peanut butter etc. i found mini pizza bites yummi and mini scotch eggs, and cocktail sausages. canapes basically but not sure thety wld be low gi. oatcakes def are.
