Transition. My nemesis! Please share.....

What are others experiences of transition? I find it terrifying and nearing birth number four, it is the one single aspect of labour that worries me.

I know it's experienced differently by everyone and it would be really good to hear how it felt to others and how people have coped with it, how their birth partners may have helped (or not!) etc.

TIA!

PM, totally the same - I am nearing birth number 3 and am really scared of it too

find it terrifying and awful and I've no tips! just the fear and confusion are enough to make me cry now (and the puking)

my doula helped a bit last time I think - and was less scared with number 2 than first time I suppose....

dinny · 18/01/2009 20:45

Lulumama - tell us why transition is so awful, pleaes - something we can remember when we're in the throes of it...

is that when the mooing starts? why do I always puke guts up?

Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:46

Sorry to be dense but what is transition (I know the theory but had epi so didn't feel anything). Why is it so scary???

dinny · 18/01/2009 20:47

it's between first and second stages - dunno why it's so scary but it's horrible! really confusing and scary and weird puke-making

hopefully someone can explain why!

TheProvincialLady · 18/01/2009 20:57

I didn't get a transition or a pushing stage with DS2 (spinal with DS1) - was I doing it wrong?!

papiermache · 18/01/2009 20:57

Ooh, I'm having some whacking great bh's!

When are you due dinny? I suppose on the upside, we've made it through it before.... I'd quite like to do more than just cope with it/struggle through it though IYKWIM?

I've been having some big BH this time too, PM - can't remember them that much with dd or ds

um, am due 7th March, so am 33 weeks (I think!)

when are you due?

dinny · 18/01/2009 21:01

PL, maybe transition is really noticeable with fast-ish labours? not sure though! just say that as both mine were quite fast and intense

papiermache · 18/01/2009 21:11

Hmm, that's interesting! I've had a 4 hour, a 2 hour, and a 1 hour labour so far..... maybe you're on to something?!

Due thursday

Transition is the bit when you think you're going to die because you just can't exist in that state for a moment longer.

Happily it means that you are about to enter the second stage of labour and so you won't have to endure it for much longer!

papiermache · 18/01/2009 21:22

I want to be happy about it! I appear to be absolutely beyond reason at that point in time though. No words yet have sunk in during transition so this time I've pre-ordered cuddles from birth supporters

Just try to think 'I feel like I'm going to die but that's unlikely so I'll moo instead'

Catchy slogan huh?

juuule · 18/01/2009 21:32

Start of transition for me, is the point when my legs start shaking, I feel a bit sick and start to get a bit panicky. Contraction pain ups a notch too. Generally have about half an hour to go before delivery and that's when I decide it's time to go to hospital (15-20mins away).
Sounds nice and calm doesn't it. It's not

dinny · 18/01/2009 21:51

Juuule, how many children have you? a few by the sounds of it....?

PM - an Aquarian then, probably - my bday is Sat

papiermache · 18/01/2009 22:02

Yup, probably dinny; same as my youngest who's 11 months old. Think that's half my problem, I haven't had time to forget like I usually do!

mmm, my ds will be 4.5 when this one is born and it's still vereeee fresh!

wow, 11 months is a little gap!

digitalgirl · 18/01/2009 22:32

Transition for me was the most painful part, but it was fairly quick. I only really remember having maybe two or three contractions. I was half sitting half standing on the edge of the bed, screaming at the top of my lungs while stamping my foot on the floor (I think I must have looked like Tom in Tom & Jerry when he yowls in pain). Then all pain stopped. Then I had to push, now that was hard work - that's the bit that I'm scared of for next time.

I think throughout the first stage I'd been hoping I'd be one of those non-pushers and that my body would push the baby out for me. 2 hours of the most exhausting physical effort later, DS was born. I distinctly remember thinking that I would NEVER do that again. But I suppose I will one day!

BoffinMum · 19/01/2009 07:35

During transition for me the pain stops and I have a quick apple juice or something. Then my second stage/crowning script goes like this.

"Fucking hell, I don't like this bit, really I don't like this bit, I hate this bit, fuck off everyone, fuck off baby, I can't believe I am doing this again, FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK".

Something along those lines. You can usually hear me in the next street.

For my fourth I am doing the hypnobirthing thing but I hold out little hope frankly. I am actually quite scared.

lizziemun · 19/01/2009 07:48

With dd1 transition was the only time i moaned found uncomfortable. But i looked at dh (who was terrified) i keep saying sorry for unpsetting him .

Don't remember it at all with dd2 as was induced with her.

papiermache · 21/01/2009 21:32

turned out they weren't BH's!

You'd think I'd know 4th time around
