ok. Client calls 2am waters gone? she describes it to me, I confirm as much as i can over the phone, and advise they call hosp just to let them know whats happening.

They ask them to go in to check, they do so and J is given VE on arrival?

See this is where I am confused, I didn't think it was common practice for ve's to check for waters when lady not in labour. Couldn't they have simply looked at her sodden pad, was pinky as expected.

I am furious as now they are on a timescale to deliver and she hasn't gone into labour yet.

they're telling her to come in 8am for induction. 36hrs after waters going.

whats your take on it?

sorry for dodgy grammar, on dd's laptop and bloody keys all over the place.

thanks for any replies

someone must have an opinion, or are you all doing something else this evening.

i think it's normal for hospital to check if woman is actually in labour/dilated if waters have broken.

and to have a time limit on how long they'll be left.

obv she is perfectly within her rights to refuse any of this

Penthesileia · 13/01/2009 22:07

Am not doula or anything, but in the morning the day before I had my DD I got v. wet knickers, but no sign of labour. Called my midwife who said to get it confirmed that it was my waters. So called the midwife on call who came round, and did a VE. Confirmed it was amniotic fluid, and because there was no sign of labour I had to be booked for an induction 48hrs later. Luckily my waters went in full at 3am that night, and DD was born, at home, at 3.20pm the next day.

liahgen · 13/01/2009 22:11

thanks for replies ladies . in my experience it's not been the norm for a ve to be performed to confirm waters when it's clearly what has happened.Lady was not in labour.

Am always being told by mw's that they don't do ve's willy nilly to confirm waters as this then gives you a smaller timescale to deliver as they have introduced the risk of infection.

Different hospitals i guess.

I assume she was given a Speculum to confirm prom. It may not have been glaringly obv that it was prom on inspection of pad, they may have wanted to rule out if it was a leakage of urine. 86% of women will go into labour within 24 hours of prom so she has a good chance.
also the rcog recommends that prom is not to exceed 96 hours before induction begins. your client obv has choices as long as she has all the info and understands the risks of both.

liahgen · 13/01/2009 22:24

thanks me, are you a mw?

Maybe it was a speculum which is not the same as a ve is it? I asked her did they examine you vaginally and she said yes, maybe she didn't realise there is a differece. Its their first baby.

Obviously, i've informed them that all the decisions are theirs still at this point, and if they are feeling ok, and things are good, then they don't have to agree to induction at 8am neccessarily.

we'll see, she is niggling a bit so hopefully things'll kick off in the night.

have just recommended she try and sleep in case she's woken in the night.

It is normal practice for a VE NOT to be performed if membranes have ruptured and the woman is not yet in labour(no need for an examination) A speculum examination would be performed to confirm/rule out if waters had gone and a swab taken to screen for any poss infection in case woman does not spontaneously go into labour within 24 hrs of SRM.

PROM is once waters have been broken for 24 hrs+(prolonged rupture of membranes)

Penthesileia · 13/01/2009 22:38

Ok - just goes to show that you shouldn't post if you don't know what you're talking about (I mean me, btw!)!

Sounds like I had a speculum examination & swab - not a VE!! I thought it was. So maybe your client made the same mistake!!

Sorry!

starlight that doesn't sound good.

that's what i thought Flo, which is why i'm now realising she has prob had the spec exam hasn't she. I asked her did they say if you wre dilated at all, etc and she said no, so the more i think about it, the more i realise.

it was a bit odd, cos this is Pembury and they're normally very women centred there, taking lots of care over womes choices etc.

watch this space tomorrow maybe for a birth announcement hopefully. x

Just wanted to add that I had a speculum exam but the mw did refer to it as a VE and then just explained she had to use a speculum because my waters had gone. FWIW I was not dilated & definitely not in labour but gave birth under 3 hours later. Good luck to your clients.

liahgen · 13/01/2009 22:59

bloody hell 3 hrs.

Well that didn't happen but it takes me 20 mins to get tto their house. Nice quickone would be nice.

NICE guidelines now recommend induction if membranes rupture >24 hours before labour starts.

liahgen · 13/01/2009 23:07
