First line is 2o (can't do superscript) tear, which means secondary (i.e. through both skin and muscle but not extending as far as the anus).

vicryl rapide is the thread that was used to suture - it then says "continuous to posterior vaginal wall"

The ticks are to check everything off (i.e. to make sure that they didn't leave anything inside you!).

SnowOfHands · 11/12/2008 16:33

According to my notes there was a clown and a monkey present at the birth of dd.

NewHollyOtherIvy · 11/12/2008 16:33

Aahhh 15ml looks better

MrsTittleMouse · 11/12/2008 16:34

anything ending in "caine" will be the local anaethetic.

Lulumama · 11/12/2008 16:34

basically, your perineum was examined, found to have a second degree tear, you were given a local aneasthetic and stitched up, and then everything used was ticked off to ensure nothing random left in your foo foo!

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 11/12/2008 16:38

Thanks - my stitches didn't hold and I have some small issues but I never really knew what she had had to stitch up.

I remember having to have gas and air so she could put in the local - even though I hadn't had any to get DS1 out

Preparing to suture, checked perineum
2nd degree tear
15mls of 1% lignocaine (the usual dose) infiltrated (injected)
Sutured in layers with Vicryl Rapide 2/0 (routine suturing, vicryl rapide is an absorbable suture which most places use)
Continuous to posterior vaginal wall, interrupted to muscle layers and skin (sounds fine to me - different people do it different ways - depends how you're taught and on the tear itself)
Swabs counted
Bleeding from your vagina checked
Needles counted
Haemostasis achieved
Finger up your bum to make sure none of the sutures have gone through into your rectum (nice!)

All good

Snaf · 12/12/2008 10:07

Just to mention - although it's reasonable to do interrupted to muscle layers and skin, we are usually taught now to do continuous stitching though vaginal wall, perineal muscle and skin. Particularly in terms of comfort for the woman afterwards, continuous stitching is preferable (fewer knots, for a start).

It does depend somewhat on the tear, however. It would be quite hard to say whether the method of suturing had anything to do with your later problems, though. HTH.

oooh I remember the finger up the bum bit I had experience of gas and air for the first time whilst she was doing my stitching and I ended up talking to her about bumsex because she asked if she could insert her finger pooor woman!
