I have never seen it any other way on TV, but haven't experienced it IRL.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/11/2008 21:03

I have had 2 had skin to skin with DD, DS was taken away and wrapped and when doing feedback before I left, MW was disapponted that I hadn't been offered skin to skin

expatinscotland · 13/11/2008 21:03

i don't think so.

this time round, they took DS away before i got him because he'd been born via ventouse and had cord wrapped round his neck twice to wear cosnultant was pulling it off and cutting it with a look of concern on his face.

paeds were waiting and took him off to check him over.

dinny · 13/11/2008 21:05

Ecpat - did your hypno CD help this time? congrats again btw

just wondering with C section in particular - this baby cried but they still wrapped him up (it was RL, not drama)

Was a while before I held dd, she was checked and wrapped before they sort of wedged her under my chin.

PictureThis · 13/11/2008 21:06

Not always, it depends on the condition of the baby when it comes out. I noticed that too, my initial thought was 'let them see him then'. He was crying so was obviously fine. If I had been that midwife I would have taken him to Mum and Dad first.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2008 21:06

dinny, it helped indeed.

i did wind up with epidural and ventouse, though, as baby was much bigger than his sisters and cord was round his neck.

HeinzSight · 13/11/2008 21:06

No, am SURE DD was shown straight to me. In fact the anaesthetist took photos along the way, she also gave us a running commentary, there didn't seem to be a delay between 'there's the head' and having a cuddle. I do have a fab photo of the obstetrician holding her up and having a good look at her priceless

lulumama · 13/11/2008 21:06

i think it is because there has been a c.s due to complications so baby has to be checked ASAP , or if planned, the baby has not been through contractions and labour which help clear the airways so need checking ASAP.

however , you can ask for immediate skin to skin as long as all is well with your baby at birth.

HeinzSight · 13/11/2008 21:07

Yes DD defintely handed straight to me, she was COVERED in vernix

whomovedmychocolate · 13/11/2008 21:08

First baby was offered to me immediately, second not for two minutes (longest two minutes of my life) as he was born very quiet, and quite blue. He was fine though, he just was a tad surprised to be dragged out the catflap by his arse!

dinny · 13/11/2008 21:10

Ah, so it was because was emerg C section?

I just can't handle the thought of labour OR a section - argh, no way out!

Expat - glad it helped!! I posted on your thread that your ds was same weight as mine! 9.3? and my dear ds caused me probs with his shoulders getting stuck!!

maybe this one will be smaller [eek]

how do they get them out - just put their hands in and pull? are they ever wedged in so much that they can't pull them out?

Forceps normally.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2008 21:12

9lbs, 5oz.

lots of 9lbers in November!

dinny · 13/11/2008 21:13

what, forceps with the section? suppose they still have to get them through a smallish gap...

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 13/11/2008 21:13

And yes they do get wedged. Sometimes the asst surgeon has to press very hard on one bit of you to make the baby pop up in another bit so he/she can be grabbed and extracted.

DD1 was supposed to be handed straight to me but was blue when she came out so was takne to be checked, then I think they just wrapped her up to keep her warm and handed her to DH, I didn't get a hold for an hour.
She was not impressed when they then stripped her naked and plonked her on my (still paralysed) chest

Highlander · 14/11/2008 10:21

DS1 was a CS with a ventouse req'd to get him out so he had to go straight to the paed. it was right by the table so I wasn't bothered. he was bundled, again, not bothered.

DS2 - there was a sign above the baby station in theatre saying, 'offer skin to skin before weighing'. The station was quite far away, which distressed me slightly. I declined skin to skin on the table, which I kind of regret now. However, birth to me holding him in the recovery room was only 30 mins and I then had uninterrupted skin to skin for 2 hours which was FAB!!!

Your birth plan should include what YOU want to happen after birth, be it VB or CS. You should ALWAYS have the chance of skin to skin, regardless of how you give birth.
