Anyone else watching Labour and Delivery on Discovery H & Health right now? Enough to put me off for life...

... am watching some poor girl in a US hospital have a forceps delivery and it is making my eyes water. Am pregnant with first baby and not sure if this is helpful viewing!

Did watch lovely Homebirth Diary just before though, so I suppose it doesn't have to be this way.

Ouch!

I cant help myself when it comes to watching childbirth videos! Up until I found out i will be having a section, I spent HOURS on youtube going through all their childbirth videos! (some are VERY graphic) Some were lovely, natural and (looked) like very liberating experiences whilst others looked horrific!

I still found it fascinating though!

I used to watch the H&H channel all the time, but i noticed recently, that all the pregnancy/labour progs are usually on at stupid o' clock in the morning.

Urghh!

Don't watch ANY of the american ones! They just get them in there, give them an epidural straight away, they strap them to the bed with monitors and god knows what holding them down,

then examine them every 10 minutes and tell them when to push!

Its awful.

Its not like that here, in my experience anyway!

Stick to homebirth diaries

I agree. The American ones are ok to watch but doesn't give a true reflection on what happens in the UK.
Very different IMO.

MamaG · 01/11/2008 17:02

I will NOT watch anything like that

badassfeline · 01/11/2008 17:06

I have to admit, I found the American ones confusing, as it's nothing like that over here. Although I used to find myself balking at the Portland Babies one.. None of that ever seemed 'real' to me either. I remember one called Liverpool Mums.. That was great that was.

Agree. No point watching something that is unlikely to reflect the experience you'll have here.

Some countries routinely give an epidural, the mother is continuously monitored and the whole procedure is seen as a high tech medical event from the off. Little wonder that it ends up as a surgical procedure with forceps and god knows what.

Childbirth is a natural event - except for the relatively rare occurrences where high level intervention is necessary.

Stop giving yourself the heebee jeebies

The American birth programmes should come with a government health warning!!

For an amazing waterbirth (albeit with a totally freaky fishtank like birth pool) have a look on youtube for "breech waterbirth" AMAZING!
