Anyone know the correct term for a quick labour? Starts with 'precip' I think.

The doctor used this term and I want to look it up but can't remember the correct term. Went from 3cm dilated to delivery of dd in 30 minutes. TIA

precipitate

Thanks lulumama. For some reason the correct term won't stay in my head!

are you considering home birth this time?

lulumama · 26/10/2008 17:47

presuming you made it to hospital last tiem !!

suiledonn · 26/10/2008 17:50

Yes. Had some a show and contractions started out very close together so didn't hang around. Not long after I was examined I told midwife I had an intense urge to push which she was extremely dubious about, until she looked again and dd on her way.

Nearly 39 weeks now. Exmained on Friday, cervix short and very soft and about 2cm but other than the odd twinge nothing happening since.

Back to hospital for monitoring tomorrow morning so fingers crossed.

Homebirth not an option.

why is it not an option?

Living in Ireland. There was a problem with insuruance up til recently and no independent midwife locally. A bit of a joke really as my nearest hospital is 45 minutes away. Having issues with the hospital as 2 doctors, including head of obs. recommend induction to be on the safe side but other doctor I saw and midwives totally against induction.

i see

how do you feel about it all? would you like to be induced? sounds like you will struggle to get to hospital

Flum · 26/10/2008 18:12

Mind you I had a two hour labour with first baby and was ready to push, fully dilated but they found she was breech so wouldn't let me push and did an emergecny CS instead.

Second labour was laboriously long....... nearly 20 hours! So it may not be fast for you this time.

I would certainly want to be prepared though as you are!!!

suiledonn · 26/10/2008 18:57

I was very anti-induction at the start but my resolve is weakening. On one hand going on like this worrying about every little twinge and not being able to relax is hardly good for me and the baby but on the other hand one hears so much negativity about induction that it is difficult to consciously opt for something so risky. I've looked at the stats and a high percentage of inductions do end in c-sections. I had a drug free labour last time but have been assured by several midwives that it is difficult to get through an induced labour without some pain relief.

i think ultimately it is your choice

if a baby is coming very fast, it is because nothing is holding them back , so likely to be uncomplicated if baby comes before a midwife or paramedic can get to you

induction may well work like a charm ,especially if your bishops score is high.. if your cervix is soft, short, anterior , dilating and your baby is at least partially engaged you might well respond really well to an induction. i know several women who have coped perfectly well with an induced labour with little to no pain relief.

hard to plan the unplannable really isn;t it?

HandbagAddiction · 26/10/2008 20:30

Just to add to what Lulmama has said - I have had 2 very positive experiences with induction. First time had no pain relief at all - second time around just a bit of gas and air....

shanks313 · 26/10/2008 20:32

With DD2,I had induction and went from 1cm dilated to baby being born in 10 minutes...so can make it alot faster.

lulumama · 26/10/2008 20:41

crieky shanks! you must have been in shock!

suiledonn · 26/10/2008 22:17

I'm going to talk it over with dh again and try and come to a decision. Have to go to the hospital for monitoring again tomorrow morning so if things have progressed at all I will probably have to make a decision one way or the other re: induction. It is difficult to make a rational decision at this stage because my judgement is clouded by wanting this baby as soon as possible.

Precipitous labour I think.

shanks313 · 28/10/2008 16:35

Lulu-Very...the midwife examined said I was 1cm,I was upset so she called my DH and told him not to hurry as I was only 1cm.DD was born 10 minutes later and DH missed the birth.
The midwife didnt even believe me when I said my waters had broke and was trying to move me to the bathroom to get cleaned up.

frazzledoldbag34 · 28/10/2008 21:31

shanks313
That is seriously precipitous! Or maybe the midwife was wrong about the 1cm?????

shanks313 · 29/10/2008 10:11

She must have been...the whole experience wasnt very nice.
They even got DDs birth weight wrong, they said 7lb 8,she was 7lb 4.
