Back labour - is it a constant ache or does it come and go?

CMW came out earlier and checked the position of my baby as I've had backache for hours and have been spotting

She thinks I am in early labour but I have no noticable contractions except a few after she did an internal exam.

I've been having dark red shows every few minutes all night so I guess something is happening, just didn't expect it to feel like this.

Is it normal for back labour to start as a constant dull ache that gets stronger without coming and going and for there to be no obvious contractions.

Please tell me your experiences

I'm asking as I suspect a false alarm but if it might be for real I need to keep DH at home and he is due to leave in 2hrs

dd was back to back, is that what you mean? the back pain came and went with each contraction, but I think i may have had constant dull aches throughout labour. hope your's gets going soon

is dh going far. with a first baby it is likely to take hours and hours, if not a day or 2, so dont worry about him being away as long as he can get home in a reasonable amount of time

It is a while ago, but I think I did have back ache like this in early labour. Also just a general feeling of uncomfortableness.

Good luck

This is how I felt with DS1. Agree about letting him go to work if he could be back within an hour of your phone call. Otherwise you might end up wasting some of your paternity leave.

Best wishes

Dark red shows sound unusual though? I maybe had one or two like this. Perhaps ring your CMW again to ask.

This is baby 2 but had terrible SPD with baby 1 so wouldn't have known if the backache was labour or just that.. it was an induction and had real contractions

DH will be about 2 hrs away

Thanks for the advice.

Have you got childcare for DC1?

ajm200 - Sounds really positive to me With my DD I woke in the early hours of the morning with constant back pain, which although seemed to come in waves was continuous. I felt no contractions as such just back ache/pain. I phoned hospital and was advised that I had a possible kidney infection, only to arrive at hospital and deliver DD 15 minutes later. Good Luck.

My best friend is going to take him when labour kicks off properly. I've now got an upset tummy to go with the backache so I guess that's another sign.

Still there ?

ajm200 · 15/10/2008 21:59

Yes . MWs say this is early labour but I don't think much is happening. Just lots of pain in my back. They moved to my tummy for a while earlier at about 20 mins apart but now just have bad back pain again.

I think this baby is days/weeks away still.
