What are these pains I'm having??

I am well overdue. Now 40+15. However, for thes last day I've been getting strong pains across the bottom of the bump, which feel like seriously strong period pains, and then move into my back.
I had to go in to the hospital yesterday for monitoring because of being so overdue and refusing induction, and the mw said the pains are nothing, just aggrevation from the sweep they did. Only, it does feel crampy and VERY painful.
What are these pains?? Is it possibly the beginnings of warm up for labour or is that wishful thinking on my part? The mw was one of those who just doesn't listen to you. I know these aren't proper contractions, I just need to know what's happening, and whether this could be a sign that things are FINALLY getting moving?
So desperate and so fed up now.

Definitely agree with the deep slow breathing - it makes a HUGE amount of difference to the pain levels.
You will be fine. Ooh, I am so excited for you!

according to her facebook she's had a wee boy but we (the due Aug thread) - haven't heard officially on MN yet!

hey everyone - got back from hospital with baby boy last night. We got to the hospital after 3.30 (I think) and when they checked I was already 4cms dilated. I think some of the delivery suite staff practically started cheering when I came in having a contraction (I guess I was a pretty familiar face by that time, what with all the monitoring I'd had)
The mw I got was totally lovely, and really fought for me to be able to have a waterbirth, because the recomendation was that I should be strapped up to a monitor throughout because of how overdue I was.Anyway, had to be monitored for an hour then was allowed in the pool. I was feeling rather sick, so when she gave me the g&a I din't really use it properly because I was already being sick before having it. DP was lovely rubbing my back through contractions. mw reckons I must have a really high pain threshold because I got through with back rubs and deep breathing until about 9.30. The original mw went off shift and had a new one + student who were also both lovely. When they took me out to examine at 9.00pm, I was 6 cm, but the pain got too bad out of the pool, and I opted for some pethidine (obviously couldn't go back in the pool after that) anyway, the best bit was, they gave me anti-sickness jab with it, so when the pethidine wore off I started sucking on g&a like there was no tomorrow!
My body started pushing on its own - I didn't even know that was what I was doing,to be honest - my MIL told me, and got the mw's who were brilliant because they could see I had no control over it at all. Anyway things were fine until they could see the head -my waters had still not broken- and then the waters broke and were stained with meconium, so they got paediatricians on standby, and took the g&a away from me because they said we hadto get him out fast so I needed to concentrate on pushing. Worst bit was when his head was halfway out, and the contraction stopped. DP says the head started sucking back in, which was the worst feeling EVER - I didn't know what it was so was yelling WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING at the mws
Baby wasn't breathing when he came out - was all blue and floppy, so three paediatricians were fussing trying to make hime breath - also I had a bleed so mws fussing over me, so not the ideal finish really. But still so impressed at the hospital staff - they didn't panic me even though they knew something was wrong, and everything was ok in the end!
Baby is called Sebastian James, weighs 9lb7, and is 56 cms long. Can't believe I pushed that out (have 2nd degree tear though) but he is gorgeous!
Sorry for seriously long post, but I'm amazed at the experience, and even though it didn't go exactly as I might have hoped, it was really positive, and I'm just glad we made the right decisions at the right times.
