Did anyone have a baby before 37 weeks that was allowed to come straight home without special care?

I guess this has been asked before but my search skillees s aren't up to finding it if it has.

My son arrived at 37 weeks and I'm beginning to wonder if this one will be earlier. I don't want it to be but was wondering if any of you have had early babies without complications and if the babies could come straight home?

My friend had her ds at a midwife unit at 36+5 and he came home the next day no problems, he was 5lb 8oz.

ds was 36 weeks. Spent an hour or two being checked over, and had antibiotics because he was born more than 25 hours after my waters broke. We stayed in for 4 days, but that was only a precaution as he was just on the cut off for being too tiny.

No complications other than he was still quite furry and to start off with sleepy & not keen to bf. Oh, and that I hadn't bought a moses basket yet

Fwiw, his sister (my second) arrived just after her due date.

As I understand it, chances of a before 37 weeks baby are 1 in 10; that doubles if you've already had one ... but obviously that still means that the odds are that you won't. IYSWIM.

funnypeculiar · 11/09/2008 16:13

he was 5lb 4, btw

funnypeculiar · 11/09/2008 16:14

Sorry, wasn't clear - we stayed in for 4 days but he was in with me (& thankfully in a private room)

wontbepreggersagain · 11/09/2008 16:14

dt's 1&2 born at 35+2 came home next day

dd born 35+4 born at home stayed at home

dt's 3&4 born at 30+2 came home at 34+6 with much persuasion

on the whole though 37 weekers go straight home, if you have a history of early births ask your mw what she thinks- certainly 36 weekers are often home in a few days, 35 weekers can be tricky as they are at that in-between stage of sometimes needing scbu, sometimes not.

Then there's the question of reliable dates- i still swear dd was born at 37+2 but the hospital thought different

Good luck with the birth

ajm200 · 11/09/2008 16:20

It may seem like I'm being paranoid but I've already had preterm labour with this one at 29 weeks and now suspect my waters are leaking at 34 weeks. The MW couldn't confirm that they were when she checked yesterday.

After all this fuss, I'll probably go overdue and end up induced!

wontbepreggersagain · 11/09/2008 16:28

it may just be a hindwater leak- have they already given you steroid injections because of the previous pre-term labour? if so
a) if baby does happen to arrive early there is less chance of any breathing issues

b) a little known fact about the steroid jabs is that often they prevent early labour and women end up overdue they told me that just after i'd had the jabs so obviously doesn't work for everyone but mw said they end up inducing a lot of steroided (!) women.

funnypeculiar · 11/09/2008 16:28

Doesn't sound like you're being paranoid at all!

Have you had a steroid injection (presume so if you've already had prem labour). What does your mw suggest as next steps?

RandomIdiot · 11/09/2008 16:34

My neighbor ahd a 35+ something weeker that came straight home...but I think that there was a question over accuracy of dates.

I know a triplet born at 34+ something that went straight to ward with mum. It was obviously a c section so mum stayed in for 5-7 days or whatever. He went home with his mum. His susters went home after a week or two.

Steroid injection unnecessary at 34wks.

I think Aitch just had her DD2 at 34ish weeks. She stayed in a weekish with baby but they both came home together.

domesticslattern · 11/09/2008 16:35

As preggersagain says, might also depend if your dates are spot on.

My DD came at 36 plus 5, but was a good size and came straight home. I always suspected that the official due date I was given was wrong TBH, and that she was not that early after all.

Good luck!

ajm200 · 11/09/2008 16:35

Didn't get the injections. The labour went all night and died out around lunchtime the next day. By the time I decided it wasn't BHs, arranged childcare, was monitored and they'd paged the DR who took ages to respond as she was in theatre dealing with a complicated birth, it has died out. They watched me for a bit longer then decided not to give the injections. Put me on bed rest for a while and I had weekly Dr/MW checks for a few weeks.

MWs seemed much more interested with my 1st. This team seem really chilled out. Suggest I go back for more monitoring if I get lots of BHs, will check for leaks again in two weeks or I'm to go to the hospital if the leaks become more than an occasional trickle. They can't tell if it is the waters or just a lot of normal discharge as I'm near the end of the pregnancy.

good luck

mummy2t · 12/09/2008 11:42

ds1 born at 36 weeks came home after 2 nights but no special care
ds2 born at 37 weeks came home 3 hours after

lisad123 · 12/09/2008 12:43

DD1 born 37 weeks 5lb and stayed for a week

DD2 38 weeks 5lb 3 straight home

ChasingSquirrels · 12/09/2008 12:46

my ds1 was 37 exactly, were in a couple of days because he didn't feed, once he started we came home.
ds2 was 36+6, he was a home birth and we never went in.
not much before 37 weeks though!

Oumasrusks · 12/09/2008 15:51

DD2 was born at 36 weeks and we stayed in for 4 days. When I was still in labour the hospital told me I would have to be in for 48 hours after her birth as they give all babies born before 37 weeks antibiotics in case an infection caused the early labour (this proved not to be the case). We stayed in a bit longer because she had jaundice and needed to be under the bili-blanket.

bramblebooks · 12/09/2008 16:13

DS was born at 36 weeks and we came home the next day. Mind you, I was the one taken back in the day after as it was my blood pressure that was the problem. All the best.

macaco · 12/09/2008 19:18

I live in Spain
Ds born at 36+1 weighing 2160g or 4lb 12. jaundiced. we were kept in obs for an hr or two but with him on my chest or next to me in a cot..not in an incubator.
We went home 2 days later. Very sleepy and BF was very difficult..too sleepy to latch.

dinny · 12/09/2008 19:19

my dd was 35+5, 6.7lb, problems feeding but no SCBU

ds was born at 40 wks

forevermore · 12/09/2008 19:23

dd 35.5 6lb 3oz prblems feeding but home next day and psill problems feeding at age 3{....sisters baby born 27 weeks stayed in NICU for 8 weeks and SCBU for 3 weeks, feeds like a truper and we have to lock up the fridge when he comes over...now aged 3

Weegiemum · 12/09/2008 21:56

my dd2 was born at 36+6 (induced due to my health)- was 7lb 15oz and came home with me after a couple of days (my problems, not hers, she was fine!)

I dread to think how big she would have been at 40w. The others (at 39+3 - 9lb 12 and 38+5 - 9lb 3, both natural uninduced labours) were big enough.

I had prem labour with dd2 as well and they said the steriods I had made it less likely she would be early - in fact, it took a while to get the induction going (on 2nd attempt) because of that.

ajm200 · 12/09/2008 22:58

Have had backache all evening, a dizzy turn and two shows. The backache is constant so don't know what baby is doing but I hope she stays put.

i had my ds at 36 weeks dead on and i was allowed home 36 hours later, he was 5lb 11 and perfectly healthy except a clicky hip (which turned out to be nothing) but at 2 weeks old he developed jaundice which the midwife said 'feed him loads and it will disappear and have him out in the sun' he was very yellow but they didnt want him back in under any lights or anything, have always wondered if this was down to him being early and being allowed home so quickly!
