contractions (sorry if TMI)

what does it feel like to go into labour naturally?

with DS i was induced and because of my allergy to the prostin gel, i never really felt contractions as my labour was stopped and i was given an epidural.

basically I have had lower back ache for a couple of days and today lots of pains in my bits (sorry for TMI) and across the top of my bump . DH is convinced this is he start of labour - i have to phone the hospital as soon as i feel contractions to go in and have a section straight away.

there has always been some debate about my dates as i thought i was due this week but my scans put me two weeks later. however every scan with ds showed he was about 10days behind with his size but i knew exactly when i was due as AF was regular as clockwork.

so basically, should i be worried or is this just normal, end of pregnancy pains?

I think it's a very personal thing, no-one else will be able to tell you for sure. I guess if you have to go straight in if it's labour then the best thing is to phone the hospital and see if they want you to go in. They can monitor you for a while and tell you what's going on.

thanks Pinkspottywellies - my gut feeling is that it isnt labour as none of the pains are regular and DH is just panicking. (he is scared that we will have a repeat of last time and DS being ill after).

i think i will just leave it and if the pains become regular then phone the hospital.

sunnytimer - the section is booked for the 2nd september (10 days away). the backache is constant but the pains down below just are like shooting pains that are totally irregular (nothing for hours and then loads).

DH has gone to bath DS and i am trying to relax with a non-alcoholic beer (wishing it did have alcohol!)

Not wanting to worry you, but the pains don't absolutely have to be regular - my friend was in labour with her second without realising (she just had irregular contractions at intervals varying from 5-20 mins). They didn't particularly get stronger or become more regular and it was only when she got the urge to push that she realised this was the real thing.

I think in your situation I'd phone the labour ward for advice.

4 labours, not very regular ctx until very late on. But they were quite painful well before then (toe-curling).

Personally I would drink a little alcohol, try to relax, forget about them. Could be a false alarm. Only time will tell if it's really anything.

peanut - the OP has been told to go into hospital for an immediate section as soon as she's in labour - so I'm not sure if waiting to see is a safe option?

have had a bath and the pains have stopped (apart from the backache which i am putting down to late pregnancy as its constant)

am going to try to get some sleep and will phone the ward in the morning if still getting pains down below (havent had any for about an hour).

re going in as soon as in labour, DS's skull was fractured during birth last time so they are not prepared to even do a trial labour and would want to do the section straight away. TBH just want it all over and done with now so i just know this baby is OK.

My waters started leaking the day before I had contractions. I woke up with very mild pains that were like period pains. They were really mild and I was able to get on with my day!

Once I got to hospital they all started coming at once and were in my back aswell as my bump.

I think its different for everyone but I also believe that you 'know' when its labour. I heard a lot of people say that and now I know.

If you are unsure I would call your labour ward and get checked out.

Are they shooting pains in your bits? I had that quite a lot near the end. Or if it's more period pain like it could be the start of labour. mine started with period like pains and back ache. with dd had this at about 9 am for about an hour and then stopped until 9 pm when it all started again and progressed.

am feeling more relaxed today ST. had a good nights sleep which helped and the pains down below have eased just leaving the backache. am seeing the MW in the morning anyway,
