The hospital fucked up my caesarian - now they want me to wait five months before fixing things [big bloody rant]

Long story short, repeat caesarian for pre-eclampsia last month.

Escaped five days post partum - still felt really crappy.

Developed peurperal sepsis (deep joy), given massive doses of antibiotics and was finally starting to feel better Sunday but had this massive lump in my abdomen which wasn't getting any better. I looks like a had an adult sized jawbone sticking out my lower belly. Oh and it's really sore too.

So yesterday I went to see GP and he took one look and admitted me to hospital.

Had a scan this morning, the infection is almost gone but I had an incisional hernia, which apparently is where they trap a bit of your major organs in the muscle when they sew the muscles together.

Unfortunately there is a five month wait to get it fixed on the NHS and because the caesarian wasn't done under my private medical insurance, they don't cover the resulting fuck- ups either, so I'm left with waiting nearly half a year to get out of pain or paying around £2K to get it sorted.

Oh and apparently it may turn gangrenous or cause major organ damage if it gets strangulated...at which point the NHS will consider it an emergency and do something.

Otherwise they've given me 28 paracetamol tablets.

Are you a health professional, LaDiDaDi? I'm curious.

WMMC, I wish they'd noticed it earlier and I really hope it all gets sorted....

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 08/08/2008 11:07

Have just seen this WMMC

I don't have anything to add to the great advice on here. I just wish you didn't have this battle to fight.

Do you have enough help at hope to cope with your two lo's?

lilymolly · 08/08/2008 11:12

18 weeks is the time between presenting to gp to actual treatment- i.e surgery.

if this does not happen PCT will not get padi their HRG tariff-hence loose money

VictorianSqualor · 08/08/2008 11:14

Oh WMMC, what Bollocks.
I was really hoping they'd take better care of you this time round.

Not sure if it would help to go to the papers but I do know they like hospital stories or you could speak BBC Radio Oxford, they would probably get a show out of hospital waiting lists etc.

If you want the names/emails of the people I dealt with about the BFing picnic (they were very sympathetic) email me at fan-fkn-tastic @ hotmail .co.uk

nervousal · 08/08/2008 11:14

NOt 100% sure about how waiting times work (who is?? ) But once you're seen by your consultant he'll refer you for treatment/surgery etc and as far as we'd deal with it locally you'd have 18 weeks from original referral until that surgery. We wouldn't see the consultant appointment as treatment

whomovedmychocolate · 08/08/2008 15:50

Well I've been to see the GP and since it is now the size of a small melon they have arranged for me to go a week Monday to see a surgeon instead of waiting till September. There physically isn't a hernia clinic within 40 miles before that date and having called a private surgeon this morning, I wouldn't be able to see him before then either, so I guess I'm going with the NHS.

At that appt I'll be given a date for surgery which 'should be very soon'.

Bless my GP's receptionist who did battle with the surgeon's secretary on my behalf this morning. She apparently felt really sorry for me when it took me half an hour to get out the car and into the surgery with two kids in tow

So I'm really sore, but actually quite pleased. I've also got a PALS appt next week to discuss things and also am waiting on my maternity notes.

I'm being exceptionally reasonable at the minute and reserving the big angry guns for later use should they be needed.

poor your for the melon, but glad you are getting results.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 09/08/2008 09:57

Looks like someone is pulling their finger out at last.

Good plan about keeping the big guns for later.

Make sure you take care of yourself - easy for me to say and not easy for you to do, but ynwim

Lemontart · 09/08/2008 10:07

You poor thing Good on you for keeping your cool. Sounds like it is working too as the GP secretary was extra helpful and on your side.
Hope that a week Monday flies round and you are given a date to repair it soon. FWIW I think LaDiDi speaks a lot of good sense re the process and suggest that you are careful with any accusations about shoddy work unless you have definite facts. Get the operation booked and under way, plenty of time to question previous actions, if necessary, later. Priority has to be to get it recognised and resolved quickly - sounds like there is progess there which is fab

LaDiDaDi · 10/08/2008 00:52

Good news wmmc.

Yes, LT I am a health professional.

All of our clinic letters come to us with a date on that is the 18 week wait date, ie the time by which a patient should have been seen and treated, unless the clinician chooses an action which takes the patient off the pathway ie watchful waiting, long-term medication etc. I do work in a non-surgical specialty thouugh so may be things are different over in surgery?

DillyTanty · 10/08/2008 00:57

oh GOD wmmc, this sounds so miserable for you. you poor thing.
