Re: Questions to ask at a pre-op appt for C section?

Hi

Just wondering if there are any questions I need the answers to in advance of my C section tomorrow. It has been scheduled because my baby is breech. I have a pre-op appt this afternoon to meet with the doctors and midwife. I have a brief birth plan but wondered whether there is anything I should be asking?

Many thanks

Depends what you want really - many people like to ask that they have skin to skin contact with their babe as soon as possible.

Do you know what you'd like to do about feeding?

You can also ask if you can bring a CD of music in with you to personalise the experience a bit. Baby then more likely to be born to your favourite song than a pizza ad on the radio!

Thanks Hatty

I have put in my birth plan about having skin to skin contact as soon as poss (once it is established baby is okay) plus I will be trying to breast feed. Not sure about the CD thing. I think I'd rather just have background noise...does that seem weird...
Thanks again

Not wierd at all. I ended up having a GA with my elective section so I couldn't have my CD anyway.

I think I just didn't want to have the radio playing as it would feel too distracting- you could always ask them to turn it of or it might not bother you!

Good luck! Not long to go at all - how exciting!

i think just use it to ask about any worries you may have about before, during and after cs.
i didnt take cds either, they had radio on but i didnt really notice it.

good luck for tomorrow!

good luck, p2b

Hatty, can I hijack and ask how come a GA?

I had twins and my section was planned as twin 1 turned stubbornly breech.

My platelet levels dropped throughout pregnancy and started to drop massively at the end of the pregnancy.

The hospital said that if they dropped below 70 then it would be much safer to perform the section under a GA, as there was an increased risk of me haemoraghing (sorry can never spell that word!) if something went wrong. On the day of the planned section - they had dropped to 68.

At the start of my pregnancy I was all set for a water birth at home - at the end it was the most medical birth possible! Ah well -this time around, maybe I can be awake and labouring!

No questions but a bit of advice:- they never told me in advance that I would not be flat (you are angled head down, which is a real surprise if you don't know in advance) so keep that in mind.

And don't peep over the top. I did at the wrong time and saw someone up to their elbows, at which point I realised that the odd sensation behind my ribcage was his hands...

Also tell them immediately if you feel sick.... I tried to ride through it (and failed) and I felt such a fool when, within ooh, 15 seconds or so, the injection they gave me made me feel 1000 times better.

Many thanks for the advice squiffy. All points noted. Still feels a bit surreal that it will all be happening tomorrow!
