Feet started swelling AFTER the birth! What's this all about?

My lovely little ds2 was born on Thursday night, at 39+4. I didn't have any problems with swelling throughout my pregnancy, apart from a couple of days early last week when it was really humid and my feet got a bit puffy at the ankle.

Now though my feet are like tyres and my ankle bones have disappeared . Is this something normal or should I be concerned?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I had this with both dc. There is a technical name, which I can't remember, but did read about. I woke up with terrible night sweats for a few days and eventually it all cleared up. something to do with getting rid of excess fluids, I think. Was more painful than my bits at the time, and that's saying something!

Sorry - congratulations, too!

this happened to me too...I did have some puffiness before, which got much worse during labour and looked just awful after the birth...as tandg said though you sweat it out at night and it should be fine after a few more days. It was such a relief to see my ankle bones again when they reappeared! Keep your feet up as much as possible.

Phew glad to hear that they should deflate again soon Was sweating buckets last night in bed too so this sounds like retention. Thankfully dh won't be calling my feet my "Rodneys" (Trotters) for ever!

i had this too after my third baby ,my feet and legs really swelled up and felt like they were going to burst and saw my gp who told me it would get better in time and it did but was very scary and very uncomfortable

Hi - yes normal. My mw warned me about it, it's because of all the extra blood we have whilst pregnant. It goes down within a few days (you're probably alot less swollen already).

Congratulations on the safe arrival of your baby!
