It was all wrong at St michaels in bristol - bad luck or not?

Hi DD was 18 days late, induced against my better judgement cos they said she might die, though no clinical reason to say this. Waters broken when I was clearly not happy about it (everything going fine till then), then sudden horrendous pain and epidural, told "well it is OP" just as needle in and too late to move about to try and get DD shifted (never would have let them near for waters if the'd told me about OP either). Then epidural failed and pushed for 2 hours only to be told only 8 cm and needed to stop for an hour. 3 Hours after that finally out with ventouse and midwives pushing my stomach, DD pulled out by her arm as shoulders wedged as she tried to come out face first on her back! Home after 2 days, I kept telling them I'm not right, got home horrendous fever, rang them saying I could hardly stand, "thats your milk coming in, it makes you a bit flu ish". Soldiered on for 3 days, then back in after hemorrage and rancid infection for 5 days IV antibiotics. Unable to feed sat up due to rancid pus/pain, terrified of rolling onto DD and squashing her, asked for bed extension (explaining that had a family bereavment where that happend) to feed but "your only allowed if you've had a section".

Now I'm 10 weeks with no.2 and by that rant I'm not over it, and apprehensive about going back. What would you do? there is another hospital but it looked grim and pokey when I went there. This deivery suite has a much better envoronment - big rooms much airier, which is important to me. Anyone have an opinion on whether st michs generally this crap, or did I just have terrible luck?

I work at St Mikes and had DD there (obv, my boss would have strung me up).

Problems occur, (not just at STM but all maternity units) when drs intervene.

they want to slice n dice, midwives want it to go 'naturally' as possible.

MrsSnorty · 02/09/2008 22:03

Umm, my midwife (there) had me on my back with my feet up in stirrups for the best part of a night. My baby was back to back. She didn't tell me. It was agony. When I finally needed to push my pelvis was tilted upwards at about 70 degrees and I couldn't do it.
Didn't feel at all natural to me, sorry. Was actually relieved when the dr decided to slice and dice as by then I thought I was going to die.

Sorry Osmosis. Appreciate that what happened to me wasn't your fault and that staff can't be perfect. I am still fairly traumatised by what happened though.
I got as far as ringing the unit a few months ago to see if anyone could talk me through what happened (because I'd read on here that some hospitals offer this type of service). Whoever answered was very nice but said she'd never heard of St Mike's doing that. Please do me (and others) a favour by suggesting to your boss that some kind of debriefing/explaining session would be really helpful to those of us who have had traumatic births for whatever reason. Thanks.

mrs snorty, thats interesting. i was stuck on the bed tangled up there nearly the whole time due to continuous monitoring fetal heart thingy. ive read somewhere this is often not necessary and can be done at regular intervals but they tend to just keep it on the whole time instead. tho you'd need to 'make a fuss' about it.

it would have made a huge difference to me if i couldve got off my back i think.

funbags, is there any way you can get a doula or some fiesty well informed friend to be with you and fight your corner? i'm a veeeerrrry long way from bristol now but if i had to go to SMH again (or southmead) i think thats what i'd do.

chances are it will go better this time so best of luck to you, i really do feel for you - you dont need this stress hanging over you either.
