Does your child have a paediatrician?

I'd like some advice please:

My DS was born in The Portland 6 weeks ago and his newborn check up was done by the most wonderful paediatrician.

He was so lovely that I decided to take DS back to him for the 6 week check. DS is progressing really well, but the Paeditrician said it's good to check babies every 6 weeks and I should make another appointment...

Half of me is really tempted to take DS back (PFB syndrome in full effect! ) but the other half of me thinks it's probably a bit OTT...

So, I'd love to hear from people who have a paediatrician for their kids or have thought about it.... I'd love to hear your stories....

thanks,

I have a paediatrician and wouldn't be without one. I have very little faith in GP's and Health visitors and am not prepared to wait on NHS waiting lists when it comes to my childrens health.

We initially saw the paediatrician when my eldest was 4 months old and he diagnosed a serious milk intolerance. This had been completely missed by the HV and GP who assured me that I just had a fussy baby. He was so ill that we were given 48 hours to get it under control before he was admitted. Since then I have seen so many parents struggling with unsettled unhappy babies getting little support from the NHS, who when seen by a paediatrician have been diagnosed with milk intolerance or reflux and are much happier.

Since then, I've take the paediatrician a number of times and call on him whenever I need an opinion on something I don't think that the GP can deal with.

He saw my 2nd child about a week after birth for a quick check and I have also seen him another 2 times with her for various things.

When my son was ill earlier this year we took him to a&e who just sent us home. He got more and more ill with terrible stomach pains and we were referred to another paediatrician who saw him an hour later, arranged an immediate ultrasound and treatment there and then.

The advantages for me are a) always having someone to talk through my concerns and knowing that they are an expert in their field and having 24 hour access to care for my children. There is no price to be put on it. We are covered by insurance but will happily pay if needs be

However, there's no reason to see a paed every 6 weeks unless there's a specific reason to.

No, no paediatrician in the UK. We had a lovely GP.

We now have a paed in Italy, as with the Italian nhs every child is entitled to have a paed for free until 12 (or 10? can't remember).

Btw, here in Italy they check babies every 6 weeks roughly until 1 yr old, I believe.

My current youngest son has a paediatrician and has done since 2 weeks old because he has/had an array of health issues. 4 years down the line we have yet to be discharged and are on 6 monthly visits. We do have a GP that we rarely see as we see enough specialists during the year. My ds1 on the other hand has no paediatrician and has no need for one. DS3, who is due in 8 weeks will be seen by ds2's paed for his baby checks but should not need to see a paed on a regular basis and I know if I have any concerns that ds2's paed would see any of my kids as soon as he could if I asked.

We have a pediatrician, went for the first check and everything was fine, booked the hip scan that they do and all good so no need to go unless they are ill or have a medical problem. Our Pediatrician is amazing but sounds like yours might be taking advantage or offering you the peace of mind that all is OK. Might be worth asking the cost of a visit :)
