Been to see my consultant today, told me that baby is breech, bum down. Went on to tell me about that I’m high risk pre term labour and about possibly c-section which I really didn’t want and also about turning the baby in the hospital.
I’m really quite stressed about this.
I would really appreciate any advice on trying to get the baby to move head down. Nearly 33 weeks pregnant.

Just looking at my birthing book, there's a section on breech babies which states 'most breech babies will turn between 35-37 weeks, if anyone says your baby is breech [before this, it's just that] your baby hasn't turned yet'

I have just typed that messaging from the book - I don't know if this is any help at all but it seems like there is time for your baby to turn. Are you able to hold off if there are no other factors that make you high risk?

If there aren't any other risk factors I would personally hold off, the urgency at this stage seems a bit OTT (unless there's something else going on). I also would personally never have the turning procedure. Have a look at the spinning babies website and have a position scan at 37 weeks, then decide!

Mine was breach until 36 weeks, well this was when she confirmed he was back head down and it was discovered he was breach at 32 weeks. Midwife told me it’s not a concern until 36 weeks and even then it’s just getting more of a plan in place ie, do you want to try ECV or have a c section etc. look at spinning babies I done their exercises and by 36weeks he was back to head down. I also didn’t feel a big flip which lots of women seem to and was convinced he was still breach but he wasn’t!

As pp say it is still early!!

There’s a website Spinning Babies with advice on how to help a baby turn

All I remember is that leaning forward is better than leaning back. So if you are sitting watching tv for example try to sit so you are leaning forward - eg sit on the floor and put something in front of you to lean on - rather than slouching back on the sofa. Also spending time on hands and knees helps iirc.

My second one was breech at every scan. I tried having her turned but it didn’t work and ended up with a c section. She was absolutely fine and in many ways it was easier than my previous vaginal birth! It wasn’t my first choice but it really was ok in the end.

I have not been told of any other risk factors.
I was quite shocked when I went in and she said I was high risk pre term.
It was all a lot to take in, I personally want a vaginal birth. As others have said there is still time and will be trying some exercises to try to get baby head down.

Thank you all for your comments, it’s really reassured me that there is still time.
the initial panic yesterday was horrible!

My second baby was breech in at 39 weeks. I had been admitted for an induction and the midwife suspected it upon examining my bump. Sure enough a scan revealed footling breech. Kept in for c section next morning and then another scan revealed she had turned and was head down. She was not a small baby either so if I were you at the minute I keep calm and try the spinning babies exercises etc.

Spinning Babies, yoga, and for me, swimming down to the bottom of a swimming pool then pushing straight back up to the surface multiple times worked for mine! I felt her turn that day.
Many babies turn around so I don't see any panic now without other risk factors. But I assume there are risk factors if you are seeing a consultant already?

Spending time in a swimming pool and doing crouches/flips in the pool can help a baby turn into the vertex position on his or her own.

  • Try the following pool exercises with a spotter nearby: Crouch on the bottom of the pool in deep water, and then push off and reach your hands up as you break the surface of the water.
  • Just swimming around the pool can encourage the baby to move (and feels really good during the final weeks of pregnancy). The breaststroke is thought to be particularly effective for this.
  • If you feel comfortable! Do front and back flips in deep water. This will relax your muscles and make it easier for the baby to roll over on his or her own.

Thank you for this! Definitely will try the swimming.
Seeing a consultant because they thought I was high risk pre-eclampsia at the beginning.

I'd look at Sara Wickham's website and books, it really helped me understand what I should be doing to advocate myself, and also how risk adverse consultants can be regarding birth (I was particularly considering this around induction of labour)

One of mine was breech, then she turned transverse, and i was told at an ultrasound she was well and truly stuck! I did the ironing board exercise from spinning babies every day, and she turned head down just before 39 weeks.

As a PP mentioned too, being on all fours is good too, for eg getting down and scrubbing the floors!
