What did your induction look like

I am 39+5w pregnant and booked in for an induction, either tomorrow or Friday at the latest.
what did this look like for you?
I keep worrying that I am going to get packed, say goodbye to our toddler and think we are having a baby, but then could be sent home again.
it sounds like unless I go into actual labour (ie. Contractions start and dialate/waters break), there is a high chance of me being sent home until there is room on the delivery suite for my waters to be broken?
i will be so disappointed if we psych ourselves and toddler up, to only come home a day or two later without a baby

Also second baby, but 38+2 due to slowed growth. I was told to pack for five days. Got there at 4pm, bit of faffing and then had the pessary inserted about 5.30pm. Started contracting around 6pm. By 7pm they were coming a bit too often so they put me on the monitor to check. Baby started to increase heart rate so they took it out again around 8pm and tried to slow my contractions down with an injection. That didn't work, and still contracting 7 in 10 for over a minute each, so pretty much continuously.
At this point I was moved to labour ward despite only being 2cm as I needed 1-2-1 monitoring. Another injection to try and slow labour. Baby's heart rate still very high so they started prepping for a c section but then the consultant managed to break my waters (still 2cm) and there wasn't any meconium so she said to give it half an hour as contractions had slowed to about 5 in ten. By the time she came back 40 mins later I was breastfeeding my baby 😂
So in short, things can happen very fast. I didn't even get to read my trashy magazines and we were cleared to go home by 2am (even with me having extra checks due to a previous PPH) but decided to stay so that we didn't have to come back for new born checks in the morning. Best of luck and I hope yours is fast but without the extra contractions drama of mine!

my induction started off well but then stalled and my midwife was on the ball to get me out of pain with a fast turn around c section which actually was not as bad as I thought it would. If this happens please don’t panic. In the meantime get the raspberry leaf tea on. Good luck 😉

I've had 2 incidctions, one with the peccaray and one with the drip,

With the 1st I was induced almost straight away and had my baby a day later, labour was fine

With the 2nd ( the drip ) I was waiting in hospital for 2 days before they would induce me, I was absolutely furious 😅 I'd already started dilating so they didn't need to give me the oeccaray ( hence the drip when it was time ) ..... I wanted to go home rather than wait 2 days in hospital but they said if I did I'd lose my place in the queue and as I was there for an induction as my baby had stopped growing, I reluctantly stayed.

I was called in for induction at 36+6. They had no beds on the induction ward. They repeated the bloods that had triggered the induction and as they were no worse than the day before they gave me a sweep and sent me home.

I had my mum come over to look after my eldest. She stayed the night in case I went into labour and had to go home. In the morning my mum took her to her house for the day. At lunchtime the ward phoned and said they had room for me at 3 and asked me to come in then. I had contractions and was in labour. They did some monitoring and awaited to see if I would go into labour with induction. I didn't, they then had to wait until they were fairly sure I would have a room in the delivery suite before inducing me. My mum took my daughter home at 6 and my partner went back home and did bath and bed time. They started the induction process at 8 pm and my partner came back to the hospital and my mum stayed the night with my daughter.
Labour progressed ok, I had the pessetry removed after 4h as I was starting to hyper stimulate. They moved me to the labour room at around 8am. The labour progressed well when I was on my feet but I had to lie down and sleep because of my poor physical health. They broke my waters at lunchtime when labour had gone backwards and baby went into distress they did another exam and said he would be born very soon and he was. He had the cord around his neck which was the reason he went into distress. I didn't need stitches and I had paracetamol during the induction and gas and air through the labour. No other pain relief was needed

I was booked in at 39 weeks, had the pessary at midnight that night, back to back contractions for 11 hours, removed the pessary as was hyper stimulated, then contractions tailed off . Remained on the indcuction ward until 39+5 and rushed round to labour ward due to heart rate issues, broke my waters at 1.30pm, DD arrived at 6.33pm

I have had two.

1st was because I was very overdue- pessary (Wednesday)- didn't take, second pessary- got things moving. In short the baby came Saturday morning. I took the epidural and had a nice nap through most of the late stage labour. I actually liked my birth this way as although it was long ish it increased slowly and it felt manageable and not rushed.

2nd induction- waters had broken without labour starting for 24 hrs. So this was a drip induction. Went very fast compared to the first and the baby was here in less than 24hrs. The contractions were much more intense and labour had started within a few hours. I asked for the epidural again and when they gave it to me nothing much seemed to be happening. When I finally got them to realise it had failed- apparently a thing that can happen- I was too far gone and had to go through birth with just gas and air. It was kinda sucky and quite intense but I would have been happy enough going back for a third time.

I quite like having induction births as you are in hospital and under medical care/ baby monitoring the whole way. I found that reassuring.

This is all really helpful thank you! I have been told by the consultant they don’t want me going past today without induction, but I am yet to hear from the hospital about availability. Trying to not get frustrated with the process before it’s even started

How are you @DCmum95 ?

Ariel269 · 24/02/2026 01:39

I was induced back in August at 38+2. Had the same fears as yourself about being sent home. I ended up getting the gels.
1st gel 2pm on the Saturday- nothing happened.
2nd gel midnight- nothing happened.
3rd gel 8am Sunday with irregular contractions afterwards.
Very very slow to dilate.
Seen by doctor at around 3pm and given a sweep. Contractions ramped up and at about 4.30/5 I noticed I was bleeding. Examined and was 5cm so taken to labour suite. Delivered at 6.46pm.
Previous labours were all fast and less painful so I did struggle a little but managed with just gas & air ultimately, so wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

They were monitoring me regularly and it didn’t feel like it was taking so long. There were girls around me who had been stuck for a few days though and seemed frustrated. All in all, I was grateful for induction and turned about baby had various complications relating to GD and needed NICU for a few weeks, this was something we didn’t know about until he was born and I was glad he arrived when he did to let us get on top of it.

DCmum95 · 24/02/2026 08:26

Thank you everyone! I ended up being induced at 1:30pm and baby came at 10pm the same night - it was all very quick and intense (the contractions on the pessary were wild). Can’t believe we had a baby the same day, especially as our first took forever to come! The birth is recorded as 1hr 29m which is crazy to me!
I found all your posts so helpful and insightful whilst I was waiting for the process to start!
