Emergency Caesarean with uterine T-incision - anyone else?

Hello! First time posting on here, but looking for any advice as google searches are proving to be a little lacking in info. Will try to keep this quick.

In Oct 2023, I went into a very fast, pretty traumatic labour (8/9 days overdue). The whole thing is a bit of a blur, I was in early labour for what felt like days, got 3 sweeps over 3 days and finally my contractions started progressing so we were advised to head into the hospital. They said I was only 1-2cm dilated so advised I went home (30 mins away) and come back later in the night when labour had progressed.

We headed home and within the hour, things rapidly declined. Rushed back into the hospital, vomiting, unable to walk and in severe pain (to be expected). Very quickly told something was wrong and taken straight to theatre. During the emergency section, I was in and out of consciousness, however they called for more surgeons as my son was stuck. He was taken straight to NICU and I was in high dependency too. I was told I’d had complications which resulted in an additional T-incision in my uterus.

There wasn’t much other info given, even in my surgery follow up, other than that I’m a higher risk for uterine rupture, can’t give birth vaginally, will give birth next time at 37 weeks and should wait 18 months before having a second child.

I’m considering trying for my second later this year, but am now feeling very underprepared for what’s to come.

If anyone may have experienced similar and continued to have more pregnancies, I’d love to hear from you - planning to get booked in with the doctor too.

Thanks in advance!

sounds like a debrief/ appointment with an obstetrician would be useful? (did you have an impacted head?) All other things being equal it sounds like there might not be too much more to be 'prepared for' other than consultant lead care in pregnancy and an elective section slightly earlier than usual.

Thank you for replying! Called the docs so going to get my surgery notes checked out again and hopefully referred to OB just to put my mind at ease before we begin to try again.

Yes, ask for a debrief chat, I had one with a midwife and it was helpful.
I’d had a traumatic first birth and when I got pregnant again the hospital arranged for me to have a talk with my consultant , going through the notes, and they did give me good advice and extra care.

Hi there. Sounds like you had a difficult time. I can empathise. I had a traumatic experience/birth with my first DS at 28 weeks.. and due to the prematurity and precariousness of it they did a different uterine incision on me too. Not sure if it was T. But more of a U shaped I think. The usual is more of a small smile ) … when I was pregnant with my second DS- 2 years later, they told me I should have a C-section and that was planned and luckily straightforward. I had a 3rd DS 4 years after that. And again no issues but … the surgeon as he was sowing me back up peered over the screen and said my uterus would not take any more babies… and for me to not get pregnant again…. X

3rd DS was born by c-section too. Forgot to say… x
hope this helps a bit…

Hi - I had a t shape incision to uterus during an emergency CS because of fetal distress. Baby was far down birth canal & I was 7cm dilated when the section was performed which is why I needed the t shape. That was 18 months ago and I’m now 8 weeks pregnant! Had my booking appointment today and my midwife didn’t raise any big issues. Just said I’d need to meet with the specialist midwife around 24 weeks about an elective section, but probably wouldn’t need to meet with the consultant as the section is needed for medical reasons. She also said to keep an eye on the scar during pregnancy and if it starts to hurt then contact triage without delay - she said that was because I’m less than 2 years since my section (although the hospital website says wait 12 months until getting preggo again so guess she’s being belt and braces). I’m also not sure my t shape incision was recorded properly in my notes as I remember my GP saying it wasn’t in discharge notes. But my husband and I very clearly remember the consultant telling me I wouldn’t be able to have a vaginal birth because of the t shape. Hope that helps!
