Nipple Stimulation

Hi there,

I had a sweep at 3pm on Monday, which the consultant seemed very happy with but since then, although I've lost lots of show, still no baby! I am now 40+4 and they have booked me in for an induction on 41+4 which I really want to avoid.

So today I've been doing lots of nipple stimulation and have had some massive regular contractions but after about 5 or 6 they fade away and I have to start the nipple stimulation over again. Can anyone advise me how to get the momentum to keep going? I know, I know I should be patient but just wondering if anyone has had success with this. I've done 3 lots of 20minutes stimulations and they definitely work but just for a short while for a short while

Tips please

No advice sorry. NOTHING working for me (41+1) . Just keep trying 'spose - seems to be having some effect for you. Good Luck

Why do they want to induce you?
Is there a reason baby needs out?
You aren't really 'overdue' as such until 42+1 so any induction done before then is definitely post haste.
TBH, if the nipple stim isn't working then baby probably isn't ready to come.
I know how hard this is to accept, I was where you are eight weeks ago! I ended up having a CS at 41 weeks and I tried everything to make labour get a move on because I wanted to avoid the section.
Can you have sex? Lots of it, and walk a lot.
They too are supposed to be good.
What did the cons say about your cervix when they did the show?

If you have a partner, sex is brilliant for starting labour!

If you prefer, nipple stimulation can work but IME is more effective in progressing a slowing/halted labour than starting labour.

Each contraction you feel is doing something though where is your mind when you experience contractions? Have you tried relaxing and focusing on what each one feels like?

May just be that your body/baby aren't ready yet. You have plenty of time and AFAIK 40+2 is a more reasonable time to consider induction. Unless there is any valid medical reason to have your baby born sooner than it and you want?

CatharsisItIs · 11/06/2008 16:38

.......AFAIK 42+...!! Sorry

Yes, in this area, you are not considered for induction till 42+1, unless there's a medical reason. I'm holding on to this last glimmer of hope as I'm keen to let nature take its course rather than be induced, tho some days it seems like FOREVER away. It's bloody awful waiting, isn't it?

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:08

vicsta, even if you go to 42+1 and they offer induction, please remember it is just an offer, a suggestion of the way they think your labour/birth and care should go, do not be bullied into forced labour by time constraints.
You can ask for expectant management and wait for your body to do what it is meant to.

Try orgasm, with or without DH, Triggers strong contractions

Thanks everyone... Contractions have been keeping going on their own now for the last 4 hours... Just hoping it progresses on to established labour soon... Walking around is doing my head in!

My PCT are very trigger happy with the old inductions... And they only do 1 sweep!! It's all very odd.
