Prolapse after birth

Hi all,

I am 3.5 weeks after giving birth to my baby who was 9 pound 1. It was a natural birth and a very quick delivery.

I had a second degree tear (multiple tears) my midwife described it my tears as a “firework has gone off”.

I have finally plucked up the courage to look down there and saw what looked like some kind of prolapse. I’m not sure what I’m looking at but I think I can even see my cervix. My vagina feels somewhat heavy with a slight dragging sensation. I’m mortified and really down about it. It’s just been my birthday and I didnt want to be speaking to professionals about it all day so have not contacted anyone.

should I wait for my 6 week check to see my GP? Has anyone else also had this after birth? I know nobody who has had this so I’m not sure what to do. Will I need surgery or what are the usual first steps?

TIA xxx

Sounds like it could be a bladder prolapse. Women’s physio can help, but definitely not a magic cure. Don’t panic yet though, I’d give it a few days and then if it still feels bad, book a GP appointment to get the ball rolling.

Can you describe what you see?
I thought I saw a prolapse. Turns out it was my urethra 🫣

Does sound like prolapse. Mention it at your GP appointment they will tell you to do some pevlic floor exercises which should help with the prolapse. Depending on how bad you may even get referred. ( I did with a 3rd degree tear, assisted delivery)

edited to add: I’m sure things like heavy lifting isn’t great for prolapse so in the meantime try not to do anything to excessive.

Thank you. My pelvic floor has gone so weak, it used to be very strong. I got induced and even the doctor commented on how strong it was! I can’t even stop my wee now when I try

I can see some kind of tissue at the entry and then small ring like tissue above it. I have no idea what it is. I feel ridiculous admitting that but I’ve never seen it before! Almost looks like a gum ball is coming out

Thanks for this. Can I ask how long ago you had it and how you are now? I’m feeling so down about it but also now I’m pretty fresh in the postpartum stage

If you can afford it, book a “Mummy MOT” with a private women’s physio.

If you’re still under the midwife, ask her to make a referral for NHS physio. Or if not, ask your GP at your 6 week check. (The midwife/GP might ask to have a look first).

Surgery for (postpartum) prolapses is rare. The likelihood is that it can be resolved with physio.

I'd get a GP appointment as soon as possible, I wouldn't wait for 6 week check as it might be a long wait for referral

@meadowkoa- I had another baby shortly after which wouldn’t have helped with my pelvic floor. I do still have prolapse (I’ll admit I was useless at remembering to do the exercise's) however I don’t have any discomfort with it.

If you can afford it look for a Mummy MOT practitioner near you who can take a look. My GP completely stressed me out and told me I had a prolapse but a pelvic floor physiotherapist checked and couldn't see any. They can then help you manage the prolapse if you have one

At 3 weeks postpartum I had a dragging sensation and a feeling of some sort of lump at the entrance to my vagina. I had a bladder prolapse.
I’m now 3 months postpartum and it feels about 85% better. Try not to panic. It is extremely early days and there is a huge amount of healing still to be done. Get a referral to women’s health physio and download the NHS Squeezy app to help you do pelvic floor exercises in the meantime. Avoid heavy lifting and running for now. But don’t underestimate the effect of time. At your stage postpartum I was horrified by my pelvic floor, but time has massively improved things and I feel almost back to normal now.
