How fast was your next labour after a precipitous/very fast previous birth?

My last baby (#2) was born in 40 minutes, not induced just went into labour naturally. If you've had a very fast birth, how fast was your next one? I have a feeling I won't make the 30 minute drive to the hospital.

First was 2hrs. Second was 40mins and born at home, delivered by my DH. We live a 30 minute drive from the hospital and the midwives suggested a planned home birth was safer than giving birth on the side of the road..... I know more than one friend who did not listen to this advice and did indeed give birth in their car!

Chasingsquirrels · 18/11/2025 19:32

1st: 2 hrs
2nd: 15 mins. I planned a home birth because of the speed of the 1st, but due to the speed it was unattended.

Trumpton · 18/11/2025 19:44

1st one 1.5 hours from first twinge.
2nd was 3 hours from waters going but only 20 mins of labour. .
3rd was an hour but we rushed to hosp at first sign of show 2 pushes and she was out.
1st and 3rd were hand above head 2nd was back to back.

BareBelliedSneetch · 18/11/2025 19:46

1st was 3hrs 20
2nd was 3hrs.

planned a back-up home birth with no2, but main plan was hospital, as no1 was traumatic and probably wouldn’t have survived it born at home. Consultation saw home-birth prep in my folder and had a fit. I pointed out that if things progressed so fast we didn’t make it to hospital, having a plan was better than an entirely unplanned home birth! She still wasn’t happy.

Too fast for anyone to make it other than an ambulance with the best will in the world. Strategically planned homebirth meant we were able to then stay at home though.

ravenclaworslytherin · 18/11/2025 20:00

My second was 40 minutes and born in an ambulance. I wanted a home birthday for my third as I was told I wouldn't make it to the hospital in time (35 minute away) but due to COVID my trust stoped all home births. Luckily I went into labour during a hospital appointment assessing my baby's size, she was born under an hour later

1st: 7hrs
2nd: 1hr 50 mins
3rd: 1hr 45 mins.
Not sure whether those are short enough to qualify as precipitous but they were quick. All three were planned home births.

Tyrannosnorous · 18/11/2025 20:48

1st 3hrs
2nd 1hr 20
3rs 2 hrs

Anything under 3 hours is called precipitous I’m sure !

ohyesohyesoh · 18/11/2025 20:51

First was a few hours & midwife at hospital suggested any subsequent births plan to be at home. Which we did.

DrJump · 18/11/2025 20:51

4 hours for DS2 then DD was 16 minutes. I was in hospital before an induction but active labour to baby on my chest was 16 minutes.

JungleRun21 · 18/11/2025 22:32

First was an emergency induction for pre-eclampsia so was told it would be quick.
From waters breaking to baby being born, 1hour 49mins.

Second birth was a planned section on my due date but baby had other ideas. From waters breaking to birth was 1hour 21mins.
Labour ward advised us to call 999 as contractions started with a 2min gap and there was no way I'd get to hospital in time.
Baby consequently born at home in 2 pushes!

GeorgeEdwardsMum · 18/11/2025 22:35

DC1 2 hrs
DC2 45 mins (back to back as well)
DC3 45mins
Edited to add that's from first twinge.

clarrylove · 18/11/2025 22:38

First was 1hr. Second was 3 hours.

Momager12345 · 18/11/2025 22:41

First was 2 hours from start to finish, second was 8 hours.

PocketsAndSedition · 18/11/2025 22:42

1st 90 minutes active labour
2nd 13 minutes active labour including delivering the placenta according to my notes (was already on the antenatal ward otherwise clearly would have been BBA!).

TY78910 · 18/11/2025 22:51

Mine was actually the other way round, first quick (few hours), second dragged out over 20h

Crispynoodle · 18/11/2025 23:05

Don’t want to worry anyone but my 4th was born in 1 minute 48 seconds…….i was luckily at the hospital!

asco · 18/11/2025 23:23

1st was under an hour, barely made it to the hospital as it was 40 mins.
Next 3 all at home and all between 20 and 40 mins.

Superscientist · 26/11/2025 00:37

First was 2 hours active labour at 38+6, second I was induced at 37 weeks, active labour was 6h but labour went backwards after I lost the ability to stand. They had to break my waters and things accelerated quickly I went from 5 to 10 cm in 45 minutes and baby was born just over an hour after waters. My waters had gone the evening before labour with my first.
When I got pregnant again they said they would put me on the home birth kit list and I was told that if I went into labour at home to call the community team and they could do a home birth if I couldn't get to the hospital. If they couldn't get to me I was to phone for an ambulance rather than try to get there on my own.
In the end they didn't do this as it became essential that I gave birth with access to NICU/SCBU due to risks in pregnancy and then there were also risks to my health. I had two assessments for preterm labour at 34 and 35 weeks and I experienced regular contractions from 33 weeks due to an irritated uterus so it was all very different to my first . When they induced me they couldn't start the induction until they have a bed in the birthing rooms incase it was quick.

elliejjtiny · 26/11/2025 00:48

1st was 4 hours 20 minutes
2nd was 90 minutes
3rd was 2 hours
4th was an elective c-section
5th was an attempted induction. 4.5 hours on the drip got from 2-5cm dilated, then emergency c-section. Drip actually slowed things down.

OliviaFlaversham · 26/11/2025 00:49

1st - 12 minutes
2nd - 90 minutes
both early.

Dliplop · 26/11/2025 01:11

first was about an hour after water broke, second was about 20 min. But both I had 12+ hours of very gentle period cramps (wouldn’t bother with an Advil type of cramp). Hospital classified as precipitous but I knew well in advance.

sprinklersplashes · 26/11/2025 01:39

DC1 - 4 hours
DC2 - 14 minutes (induction)
DC3 - 21 minutes (home birth)
