Hello everyone, I am going to become a first time mom, wanted to ask if I would need to get rid of all scented candles, room freshners, plug in freshners, diffusers and perfumes before babys arrival ? There is not much details on nhs

I wouldn't have the plug in air fresheners on in the same room as baby, but one in a hallway or bathroom is fine. I have diffusers and candles in every room and i think it's fine. Room sprays also fine just don't spray on their bedding or clothes. You can wear perfume but keep it light, it might make baby sneeze!

Be prepared for the mumsnet scent haters to arrive and say your house doesn't need to smell nice and they hate nice smells so much they don't even use Deodorant 😂 If you like them, keep them but just don't go overboard x

I didn’t use plug-ins or diffusers because toddlers could try and play/drink them. Not sure why you would need to get rid of anything else. You’ll be glad of some air fresheners once weaning onto food starts.

I would regardless as all of those chemicals sound awful for human health (baby, adult, or other).

I stopped wearing perfume while breastfeeding as, instinctively, I just didn't want to.

Floundering66 · 07/11/2025 19:43

I stopped using/ got rid! There’s no guidance but I just didn’t like the idea of pumping too many chemicals or fumes in the air. My little boy is nearly two now, I’ve just put a Reed diffuser back in the bathroom as he isn’t in there much and I sometimes like to light a scented candle when he goes to bed.

I'm 7 kids deep and never have infact it didn't even occur to me and I can confirm they're all alive and well .

You don’t need to get rid of anything, just don’t light candles or have a plug in near to your baby.
as for perfume, all I managed with a newborn was a quick shower and a change of clothes! I never had time to even think about perfume 😹

anma302 · 07/11/2025 20:06

I would say put diffusers up high once the wee one is on the move as they can badly burn skin if they pull them over.I am talking about the reed diffusers.I would keep the plug in ones out of reach at the toddler stage too but at the newborn stage you should be ok just be wary of anyone visiting with toddlers in case of accidents.
Best wishes with the new baby.

You'll get a lot of people telling you their kids are fine, hich means absolutely nothing. You'll get that with every single safety precaution you take! Waiting 6 months to feed your baby solid? People will tell you theirs survived being weaned at 3 months.
Rear facing your toddler? People will tell you theirs were fine forward facing from 9 months.
If there's anything that worries you and you want to take extra precautions then do it and don't worry what others say. People do unsafe things with their kids all the time and they still turn out fine, that doesn't mean they are actually safe.

SweepLovesSoo · 08/11/2025 08:34

I agree with @Usernamenotav. People do all sorts of things and their children are fine but that does mean it’s the best thing to do. My next door neighbour doesn’t use car seats. Her oldest is ten now and neither of her kids are dead but it’s no argument for not using car seats.

Babies should be breathing as good air as possible. As should we all. Some people live near main roads or factories and that’s just the way it is. I wouldn’t have any scented air but people do I’m sure.

See you have the perfect mumsnet mums saying don't listen to the ones that are saying oh I didn't do this mine are fine or I wouldn't do this mine or fine and are saying this is wrong but why are they right and everyone else is wrong..years ago everything was absolutely fine..nothing has changed only deranged people..you do what you want but if you think it's harming YOUR BABY then stop..Good luck with becoming a Mum xx

Bluedenimdoglover · 09/11/2025 18:05

I wouldn't have any of those things in the house with me, let alone a new born.

Nanatobethatsme46 · 09/11/2025 23:42

Mom to 3 , new nanna to 1 and ive used candles and plug ins throughout
No need to get rid unless of course you notice an issue with allergies etc

But years ago people didn’t have all of those fragrances in their homes. I’ve got no idea if studies have been done on their effects.
