Baby size V Mum size

I'm 32 weeks pregnant with our first (baby boy)and petite (5 feet 1, weighed 7 stone pre-pregnancy) Every time I see my midwife she says "We don't want baby to be more than 6 and a half pounds or you may have trouble" and comments on my OH's size! (He's 6 feet 1 but slim).

I'm taking what she says with a pinch of salt but does anyone know if there's any truth in it?? Are they likely to do a C-section if baby is measuring big? (for the record I'm not against either a C-section or a 'natural' birth - whatever gets baby out with the least amount of stress for him).

Thanks

everyones pelvis is usually more or less the same size.

My Mum is tiny and my brother was quit a bit over over 7lbs and i was 7lbs.

i imagine that as long as he is in the correct position then it shouldnt cause a problem

Habbibu · 06/06/2008 14:52

What is she suggesting you do? The baby will be the size it's going to be, and unless you have gestational diabetes, there's not a great deal you or your MW can do about it. Shouldn't imagine they'd suggest a C-section solely on size - u/s measurements aren't that accurate. FWIW, I'm 5"4, size 12-14, DH is 6"3, slim, dd was 10lb 11 oz born and delivered naturally with no intervention - little bit of shoulder dystocia, which was resolved easily.

Ecmo · 06/06/2008 14:56

I'm 5'1 too. My babies were all on the small size, as was mentioned constantly throughout my pregnancy! I was told I would be lucky to have as heavy as a 7lb baby! My biggest was my second and he weighed 7lb 12 and was the easiest to give birth to! My first was 6lbs 9. I wasnt as slim as you thou I've always been around 8 1/2 stone .My dh is quite short too he's only about 5'7.

CatIsSleepy · 06/06/2008 14:59

baby measurements can be quite inaccurate can't they?
am 5 ft and fairly narrow, gave birth to an 8 pounder-no-one ever suggested a C-section

Amberc · 06/06/2008 15:04

My mum was 5ft tall with size 3 feet and I was born fine at 7lb 6oz.

Oh, yes - my mum is 5"1 or 2, and had my sister in hosp (9lb) and me at home (10lb)

mustsleep · 06/06/2008 15:19

i was about the same size as you when i had ds and he was 7lb 5 and i had no probs
dd was 7 lbs i think she is talking shite

TheProvincialLady · 06/06/2008 15:24

Oh some MW just like you to have something to worry about. I am 5'2 and weighed under 7 stone when I had my 8lb 12oz DS. No CS necessary.

MKG · 06/06/2008 15:30

I'm 6 ft tall and gave birth to a whopping 6 lb 1 oz baby with ds1. Ds2 I was told was going to 10 lbs if he went to term He was 3 days before his due date and was 7lb 10 oz.

You're baby will be whatever it will be.

Moosma · 06/06/2008 15:34

IME it's head size that makes more difference than weight. Once the head's out it doesn't really matter if there'a whopper of a baby behind it!

I have heard (not sure how true it is) that boys tend to be longer, so he could be long and heavy, but if his head isn't enormous it won't make any difference ITSWIM?

mandspice · 06/06/2008 15:38

Thanks everyone - sounds like my midwife is talking b*llox

i think your shoe size is more relevant than your height tbh. I'm the same height as you (although i weighed a little more pre-pregnancy, i'll admit!) but my shoe size is a 6 (which apparently indicates wider pelvic bones)

which is odd because i have no hips whatsoever so it must be something to do with the internal measurement of the cavity. Anyway, i managed to give birth to a 7lb 13oz dd, so i wouldn't worry too much.

Flibbertyjibbet · 06/06/2008 15:48

I'm 5'2" and had babies 7lb 10 then 8lbs. Both of them very long with it, my partner is 6'1".
SIL is 5' 7" and had two teeny girls of 5lbs and then 6.5 lbs.
DS 1 has a sort of long slim head, but ds2's head is the other way round, every wide round the forehead but not long.
I think your midwife is talking crap.

I know several people who have been frightened by midwives giving estimated weights and measurements during pregnancy and then went on to have a perfectly normal sized baby.

I think its only if a baby is getting HUGE due to diabetes that they get worried about the weight and either induce early or have elective c-sect.

Why do midwives like to frighten us? My midwife was not a mother when she delivered ds1, she is now pregnant mwaahahahahaha

Flibbertyjibbet · 06/06/2008 15:50

oh and from about 32weeks my ds2 was apparently a small baby with head down not engaged. Turned out the super-experienced midwife was feeling the bottom of a 9lb baby......

So don't beleive everything they say

frootloop · 06/06/2008 20:35

im 5'3" and was 7 and a half stone pre pregnancy with 3.5 size feet, my bump was huge and ds got stuck. they let me labour/push for two hours before rushing me off for a c-section, which was very kind of them

ds was 8lbs 6oz and he still has a circular dent around his head from me trying to push him out.

CarGirl · 06/06/2008 20:38

I'm 5' dh is 6'3" I have size 2.5 feet and pre my first pregnancy was 6 stone 3!!!!! My second was longest & heaviest she weighed 10lb 6oz, on tiny stitch. Oh and I measured small for dates 39cm at 42 + 2!

They really can't tell that much at all tbh.

MrsTittleMouse · 06/06/2008 20:40

I was told that DD was going to be over 9lb and I'm not much bigger than you. She was 8lb 2oz. She still got stuck, but that was because she was as stubborn as her Dad and refused to turn around.
If you are concerned about the baby's size then the best position to deliver is squatting. I was in supported squat for ages, with DH holding me up, and it allows gravity to work as well as opening up your pelvis. Your pelvis will widen by 24cm during pregnancy anyway (thank you physio that I saw this week for this info ).

LuckySalem · 06/06/2008 20:46

Mandspice - Dont let them pressure you into a c-section. I was told my baby was going to be at least 9lbs (going on scans and was a reason they didn't want me to try for HB) she came out 6lbs 2!

They're not accurate enough for them to choose how you deliver based on a scan.

Jennylee · 07/06/2008 00:48

No, I am four foot, ten

dh is six foot two

ds was 7.5 pounds

No tears, straightforward delivery

But I am getting told the same nonsense second time around, and sent for growth scans, which i wasn't the first time round - makes no sense

Jennylee · 07/06/2008 00:49

oh and my shoe size is size 2 -that kiddies wear

bethoo · 07/06/2008 00:51

i think that your body would not produce a big baby if it could not get it out. i see large women with big babies and small women with small babies. i am 5'4 and my son was 7 lbs 15

jamila169 · 07/06/2008 00:56

The shoe size thing is utter shite - if it was true then I'd have birthed elephants with my size 9's , they were 7lb5,7lb7,7lb9 and 7lb12
the truth is, well nourished healthy women rarely grow babies that are 'too big'

Nemoandthefishes · 07/06/2008 02:20

utter crap
my friend is 5ft1 and probably around 7stone she gave birth to twins at 37weeks who were 6lb11 and 6lb13 each by natural birth
