'Gritty' placenta last time, overdue again, is this a problem?

Hi, looking for some advice here, I'm currently 40+5 into second pregnancy. Really want to avoid induction as last time was induced at 12 days over, felt very pushed into it by the dr., delivered a nearly 10 lb baby at 40+14 after 31 hours of contractions.

I really, really want to avoid induction this time round, it was all so slow last time I ended up completely exhausted, forceps delivery, a shade away from a section. Can't imagine dealing with newborn + toddler in that state. Also my mum went 2 weeks over with both her kids and I think we just gestate at the longer end of the spectrum. So when I see midwife tomorrow and get appt with dr.s sometime early next week I am going to try and insist on monitoring rather than induction. I have looked up the NIHCE guidelines on induction and am happy to take the increased risk of going over 42 weeks, as the risk is still so small, so long as the monitoring says baby still OK.

The only thing that worries me is that last time the placenta was described as being 'gritty' in my notes, and I can't find much info anywhere on how common this is, or whether this is something I should really worry about for this time. The mw I saw last week said placental degradation would be the issue about going over. Any thoughts?

Hi - don't know if this is the same but when I had my first baby I had an infarcted (sp?)placenta which I think means it had started to 'fall apart'. I was asked if I smoked (which I don't) and had to push the placenta out as the cord was coming away from it.

I was worried about this for my second but the placenta was 100% OK - I had a good look at the midwife was great showing me all of it.

So, I guess what I am offering to you is that it may not necessarliy happen again - unless you have been told there is a problem already. In that case, this info is a load of rubbish!!!!!!!

Good luck x

Thanks munchkinsmum! I really wanted to see it last time but was so out of it it had disappeared by the time I was with it again, this time I'm going to ask the midwife to show it to me and explain all these things, if poss.
