Had a forceps delivery

Hi, I just had my first baby this week. But I had to be induced and have the drip to create contractions, I had a very long delivery with irregular contractions. I took gas and air but it made me sick, then got the epidural, Then the baby was not progressing so they had a doctor in who said I needed a forceps delivery which did happen. Healthy baby. But I noticed afterwards I have no feeling of sensation in my bladder to pee. I just pee uncontrollably anywhere at anytime without sensation of needing to go or hold it. Even the absorbent tena pants didn't help its like a flood uncontrollable like when a woman's water breaks. The doctors have given me a catheter for a week to see if it improves. Did anyone else experience this with forceps delivery? If so how long did it take for the sensation in your bladder and being able to control it come back? Thanks!

Yes, I had a forceps delivery and had a loss of sensation afterwards. I can’t remember how long it took for it to come back, but it wasn’t long. it was a long time ago so I can’t remember.

A friend more recently had the same after the birth of her third child in quick succession. Just uncontrollable peeing. She is back to normal though, I think she said something about loads of kegels.

Speak to your midwife / health visitor.

Hi - I had this and it’s really scary!
but it will get better. It took 3 months to settle down for me. The midwife told me to train my bladder by emptying every three hours (so when your baby wakes to feed) to ensure it never got too full which can increase the chances of leaking / flooding.
now I’m back to normal day to day. Just excercise still an issue.

Yes, I had that too, with the added joy that for the first week or so I couldn’t empty my bladder at all. I failed several urine tests in hospital, was sent home with a catheter that kept leaking, including over my husband at night, and in a puddle on the floor, and I had to be readmitted for a night, when I finally did manage a wee myself.

I then had what you describe - loss of sensation and completely uncontrollable weeing. I think it took about 6 weeks or so to get better, and then I did some intensive women’s physio for a few months to sort out the rest of my pelvic floor issues. I still have a tiny bit of leakage now, 6 years later, when I have a full bladder and cough or sneeze violently, but I’m largely back to normal.

I’m so sorry, I know how grim it is, but it really does get better. If budgets permits at all, I would really recommend seeing a specialist women’s physio. It made all the difference to me. Among other things, I did pelvic exercises using a device called a Kegel 8. And the pelvic exercise programme she put together from me was a world apart from the NHS simple Squeezy app.
