Ok so if worst comes to worst and I have a very quick labour and I am in the middle of nowhere would it be right to cut the cord? Does the baby not breathe until you do so?

Just avoid being in the middle of nowhere

controlfreakyagain · 30/05/2008 12:05

Cancel any plans to visit the Outback or the Sahara.

maidamess · 30/05/2008 12:07

Where are you planning on going?

PortAndLemon · 30/05/2008 12:09

(being serious for a moment) advice is to not cut the cord. The baby will breathe just fine. It's quite possible to leave the cord uncut for days (those practising Lotus Birth do this routinely).

Gee Whillikers.

Do not cut the cord, and if placenta is still attached inside, keep baby higher than the placenta

SlightlyMadSweet · 30/05/2008 12:23

Don't cut the cord.

It carries risk of infection, and it has to be properly tied.

My cord was cut after I delivered placenta. Much better for baby as there is a theory that the blood which is in placenta is meant for baby so let them have it. Cutting the cord cuts off that blood which is destined for them. Also if baby is a bit slow to breate the blood supply from teh cord is good for them.

If you weant to look this up check out "physiological third stage" - and you can do it in hospital too.

SlightlyMadSweet · 30/05/2008 12:23

I don't think my baby was higher than placenta. I was on all fours baby on a bean bag under me.

I could be wrong though.

MKG · 30/05/2008 14:36

If you need to you can use a hair barette to "kink" the cord.

maretta · 30/05/2008 14:38

I've had a fast labour. I was told that it would be very dangerous to cut the cord because it needed to be clamped first. It could cause bleeding. An ambulance crew or midwife would sort it for you.

maretta · 30/05/2008 14:40

Although maybe not in the middle of nowhere.

Think perhaps you'd just have to wait till you could chew it off

MKG · 30/05/2008 14:42

Thank you Maretta I couldn't think of the word clamp and all I could come up with was "kink".

SlightlyMadSweet · 30/05/2008 14:51

You do not need to cut the cord. Unless the mother heamorages the cord can be left until medical prfessionals arrive.....it is positively good for mother and baby to leave it - whether you are in the middle of a field, in a hospital bed or on a bloody spaceship.
