Episiotomy stitches!

Hi all, I gave birth 3 weeks ago and I have an episiotomy. It looked like everything was healing well until today. A couple of my stitches have come out when I wiped which also was accompanied by a yellow discharge and now where the stitch has come out it’s bleeding. (Not loads but it’s bright red blood and I can see it looks quite red and raw)

Should I be concerned and call the doctor tomorrow or is this a normal part of healing?

Thanks!

Nothing like this happened to me (but I don't know if it's considered normal)

A couple of things might help you decide:
Does the discharge smell?
Do you feel unwell?
If yes to either you need to see a nurse or GP (as you will likely need a swab / antibiotics), if not you could ask to have a phone appt just to check?

Seeing a bit of thread come away as the stitches dissolve isn’t unusual, but is the area sore, red, or inflamed? Have you got a temp or any flu like symptoms? Have you had piles at all?

Hi thank you,

no it doesn’t smell and I feel well and my self. When I’ve looked online it says it’s called lochia Alba and apparently it’s normal to get yellow discharge towards the end of postpartum bleeding so I’ll see how I go tomorrow! Thank you!

A few bits of stitching have come away more this evening was just worried about the bleeding also as no one tells you what to expect or if it’s normal! I wouldn’t say it’s inflamed but it’s definitely red where it’s bleeding a little. It’s not bleeding a lot but I can see it on the tissue when I dab!

I’d have it checked. Some of my stitches also came off and I did have a minor infection (despite no temperature and not feeling unwell). The GP gave me antibiotics, which sorted it out. It might be nothing, but if it is, it’s easy to sort.

Thank you, maybe I should give them a call tomorrow then just incase. No one tells you if these things are normal! X

You’ll still be able to be seen by your midwifery unit. I’d give them a call tomorrow to discuss. It doesn’t sound like you need to be seen urgently today.

I had a horrid time with my stitches healing and ended up having an infection, but I didn’t feel unwell. Was given antibiotics and it helped clear it up really quickly. Definitely worth getting checked out

Update; thanks everyone, I have been to the doctors today and I do have a slight infection so I’m on a course of antibiotics.
