homebirth and retained placenta-any experiences?

I am hoping to try for a homebirth with next baby. With DS had retained placenta resulting in spinal and surgical removal. I am told there is more chance of a retained placenta once you have had one, which wouldn't stop me from giving birth at home but would mean I am then ambulanced to hospital and surgery.
IS there anyone out there with similar experiences? I am tempted to try to give birth at home and keep my fingers crossed and bag packed in case I need to go in. Midwife is keen for me to do it at home but feels a bit reluctant to give full backing with my history.
Many thanks

sil had same as you with 1st baby. 2nd baby arrived without any probs, placenta came away as normal

Did you have a managed 3rd stage with your DS? You might want to look into a completely physiological 3rd stage and see what info you can find.

I had DD at home and it was wonderful - even though I had to transfer in a couple of hours (persistent blood loss from a tear). If I was doing it again and I knew I'd have to transfer, I'd still choose a homebirth.

I had a retained placenta with DD not her younger brother.

thanks for the replies. I will do a bit more research and have a chat with midwife.

I had a retained placenta 1st time and 2nd time round had a physiological 3rd stage with no syntometrine as there is a small increased risk of retained placenta if this is given. Everything was fine 2nd time round.

sweetkitty · 23/05/2008 08:36

I was 5 minutes away from a spinal and surgical removal with DD1, with DD2 I had a homebirth and chose not to have syntometrin and had a natural third stage which was absolutely fine. Am having a natural third stage this time too.

I had a retained placenta with Ds's unplanned home birth. Wasn't allowed a home birth with DD for other reasons but I asked for a physiological (ie no injection) third stage - all went fine.

there seem a lot of such cases, i also had the same problem after my baby, i asked for natural third stage but they managed! cant we file a complaint against the midwife who messed up things by tugging it too hard? and put our life in danger?

smilehomebirth · 19/04/2010 09:31

ray8: Yes, you can! And you should! How do they know we are not happy with the service they provide unless we complain? (says she who never complained in her life )

rocket - do you know what "type" of retained placenta you had? Was it just retained as cervix had closed quickly blocking it's exit iyswim or was it adherent/stuck to the uterus? Knowing the answer would impact my personal decision.

i had same prop 2nd baby retained placenta needed 2 have it manual removed 3rd baby they told me it will happen again it did but i allmost died as the placenta pulled my worm out i would of died if i wasnt in hospital

I had a retained placenta (mine was stuck to lining of womb NOT midwives fault), I was planning on a natural 3rd stage, but was told by consultant it was unlikely to help due to the way in which my placeta was previously retained.
I didn't get chance as my little boy turned to brow presentation and I had to have an emergency section.
I was told it isn't a given that it will happen again just the risk is increased.

Hope you get the birth you want, good luck in whatever you decide.

Should have been clearer, had retained placenta (manual removal) with DD, hence wanting 3rd stage with son. The consultant did actually mention me having a homebirth when we were discussing my placenta, she said she could see no reason and if it was something I fancied she would authorise it for me.
But apart from needing the section, my little man decided to come at 36 weeks, when we were still deciding what to do Hmm
