Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my recent induction experience using the oxytocin drip, because when I was being induced, I found it hard to find any positive stories and felt really anxious about what was to come. So if you're in a similar position and feeling nervous - I hope this helps reassure you.
I was induced on Thursday due to a suspected large baby. I had the prostin pessary inserted at 6pm and was monitored overnight. I was getting regular contractions, but they were short (30–40s) and didn’t lead to much progress. I managed to rest a little overnight and was examined in the morning. I was 3cm dilated, so they broke my waters and gave me 4 hours to progress naturally, but unfortunately, things didn’t move along as hoped.
The decision was made to start the oxytocin drip in the afternoon. I won’t lie, I was scared! I was worried that it wouldn’t work. But I had such kind, supportive midwives who helped keep me calm. The catheter going in wasn’t bad at all.
The drip started at 3:50pm on the lowest dose (2). I would recommend asking for any pain relief you want before it starts. I was open to options but ended up just using gas and air because things progressed very quickly. After about an hour they increased the dose to 4, and the contractions became very strong and effective.
At 5:08pm - just over an hour after starting the drip - my beautiful baby boy was in my arms! He was 9lb 5oz (they’d estimated 8lb 4oz), so I’m really glad we went ahead with the induction when we did 😂
Overall, despite my initial fear, the drip was a very positive and empowering experience for me. Things moved fast, I felt supported, and I'm grateful to the amazing team who got me through it. If you're facing the same and feeling scared, I hope this brings you some comfort. The pain may be intense, but it really can be a calm, quick and positive experience.
Happy to answer any questions! :)
