Induction with propess pessary 41+3

I’m being induced tomorow at 41+3 with propess pessary. Just wanted to hear everyone else’s stories and experiences, did it work?? Or did you need another method of induction after ?? On Wednesday I had a bishops score of 6 and 1cm dilated , she said my cervix was mid position and 1cm in length

I had an induction at 38 weeks and it worked with just a pessary. I didn’t get a Bishops score but my cervix wasn’t at all dilated and still facing away when the process started. I had the pessary inserted in the evening so I had period cramps overnight.

About 13 hours in, I asked for it to be reinserted as it had worked its way out a bit. Contractions started at about 18 hours and a walk. Contractions were pretty much 3 in 10 minutes straight away. 21 hours I asked for the pessary to be taken out because my contractions were getting stronger, they told me I hadn’t started to dilate and my cervix was still facing away.

22 hours after the pessary was inserted my waters broke. I had the baby 31 hours after it was inserted. Less than 12 hours since Friday contraction to baby born. Gas and air for pain relief and no further interventions needed.

Worked for me (no other methods needed). DC born almost exactly 24 hours after propess went in. The only negative was I recall it being pretty painful when they took it out, though that might have just been because by that stage everything was agony!
Good luck OP 😊

I’ve had two deliveries induced by a pessary. Both progressed very quickly, no issues (about 7 hours from insertion of the pessary to birth). All the very best to you X

That sounds like such a positive experience ! I get to have an outpatient pessary so I can go home for 24 hours but return sooner if my waters break or my contractions get close to 3 in 10 so hoping being at home and not in a hospital setting will make it all work too !

That sound like a dream! Was your cervix already dialated and starting to soften/ move forward before hand ? Thank you x

I’m hoping I get to have a similar experience to you ! Did you need your waters popped or did they go spontaneously ?

I had this, had it put in. Went about my day as normal went shopping lunch more
shopping had a few twinges nothing major. First contraction at 7:30 in evening arrive at hospital at 8:40 and baby born before 9pm 5 minutes after getting into the delivery room. So was a positive if not a bit quick experience

Riverbiscuits · 04/05/2025 21:44

Very positive experience for me, I was approx a week less than you (second baby) and my cervix was slightly open, I’d had one sweep. Pessary in at around noon and baby out in the birth pool at 2230! My DH nearly missed it because at 6ish I’d had a jacket potato and said I was going to try and sleep/ rest and I’d see him in the morning, but I had to call him at 2030 to say everything had ramped up and I was going to delivery.

CBAwithallthethings · 04/05/2025 21:45

I was induced at 42+2 and it worked extremely quickly, I didn’t make it off induction suite 🫣. Pessary was inserted at 7pm, I started noticing contractions at 9.30pm and he was born just before midnight. He was my second though so that might make a difference.i was so anxious before that it was going to be a long drawn out labour but it didn’t turn out that way.

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/05/2025 22:16

I was induced with the pessary at 41 weeks with our first baby. My cervix was high and completely closed. The pessary was inserted at noon on Saturday, contractions started at 6pm, and they were close enough together for us to head in to hospital at 4am that night. As it turned out, she was back to back, so the contractions didn’t do much until I’d got to just under 1cm on Sunday at noon. At that point they were able to break my waters. I then went right up to 10cm by 6pm. No drip needed, although I did have an epidural just before they broke my waters and that was amazing. She was born at 7.29 that evening.

Very best of luck, hope it goes well!

I have had two sweeps which made me loose my plug last Monday but had nothing since and just been having a lot of back pain so hopefully I won’t need any thing more than the pessary ! xx manifesting a positive experience

Wow that sounds like the perfect induction. It’s my first so I am prepared to not be as quick as that lol but hoping the pessary will be enough because Wednesday my midwife did say my cervix was all nearly there and thought I wouldn’t make it to my induction x

My cervix is central the midwife said and not soft not firm she put it down as mid on the bishops score so hopefully it won’t take too much for me either to go into labour ! My midwife was adamant I’d go into labour after my second sweep Wednesday but that sweep seemed to have done a lot less than the first one even lol thank you im so anxious about it all but hearing all the positive experiences makes me feel better xx

I really didn’t want to be induced so I’d pushed it back a few days. I think with hindsight it was the best thing I could have done after a drawn out, knackering experience the first time in slow labour for days. I didn’t expect to get to use the pool either. Good luck!

Spontaneous, quite near the end.

no, it wasn’t. Labour was from scratch. I managed it with paracetamol, gas and air. It was unusually fast. The midwife was very surprised. As was I!
Thinking of you OP, all the best x

Anon6341 · 05/05/2025 10:54

Just an update, Went in this morning and after the ctg and them examining me they said I’m 2cm, cervix is really soft and already having a lot of tightenings so they can skip the pessary and go straight to popping my waters ! They’ve sent me home as delivery suite is really busy but going to ring me back this afternoon and tell me when to come in for them to be popped xx

Thank you! They asked me to go in at 9 in the morning for them to be popped so just a waiting game now 💕

I had a propess pessary induction at 41+3 too 😁 it VERY much worked, took maybe 6 hours to get to 2cm then he was born 40 mins later. Not ideal! But yes it worked. Good luck!!!
